There are 103 days until December 31st. If you wrote 500 words every day from now until then you would have a novel completed by the end of the year.

a fun thing about me is that I worry about the grid a lot, so this was a very reassuring read. kinda nice to get some good news for once.

The surprising reason California survived record summer heat without blackouts
California has quietly, but dramatically, increased the resiliency of its electrical grid through a significant expansion in battery energy storage.

writing makes me feel normal. as an author, i still can't accurately describe the feeling or why. it's like all my mental illnesses agree to calm down when im hammering away at a story. my brain behaves, focused on the task at hand. i wonder if the same is true for other authors?

Game design isn’t about being able to identify problems. Everyone who plays games can identify problems. Game design is about diagnosing player experience, having intent, and executing. I think to a lot of folks outside dev, game criticism (an art in itself) is seen as interchangeable with design.

A lot of fantasy settings don't really explore (for various reasons) technology, military or otherwise. Pillars of Eternity still has a grab bag of weapons and armor from different eras, which is pretty fantastic, but I think if a world has the equivalent of Maximilian plate, they could have guns.

I've made a new dialogue system. It's open source, has a friendly editor, and runs on Unreal, Unity, Javascript, and Godot. You can find it at patterkit.dev And I've written too much text about it over here: medium.com/@wildwinter/...

PatterKit - Write it, play it, test it, ship it.
An open toolkit for dialogue and branching narrative in games. Your writers author in a calm, code-free editor; you drop one small file into Unity, Unreal, Godot, or the web and play it.

‘Say yes and never do it’ Mel Brooks knew how to deal with the studios
You have some wonderful stories of basically getting away with stuff at the studios.

I’d learned one very simple trick: say yes. Simply say yes. Like Joseph E. Levine, on “The Producers,” said, “The curly-haired guy—he’s funny looking. Fire him.” He wanted me to fire Gene Wilder. And I said, “Yes, he’s gone. I’m firing him.” I never did. But he forgot. After the screening of “Blazing Saddles,” the head of Warner Bros. threw me into the manager’s office, gave me a legal pad and a pencil, and gave me maybe twenty notes. He would have changed “Blazing Saddles” from a daring, funny, crazy picture to a stultified, dull, dusty old Western. He said, “No farting.” I said, “It’s out.”That’s probably the most famous scene in the movie, the campfire scene.

I know. He said, “You can’t punch a horse.” I said, “You’ll never see it again.” I kept saying, “You’re absolutely right. It’s out!” Then, when he left, I crumpled up all his notes, and I tossed it in the wastepaper basket. And John Calley, who was running [production at] Warner Bros. at the time, said, “Good filing.” That was the end of it. You say yes, and you never do it.

That’s great advice for life.

It is. Don’t fight them. Don’t waste your time struggling with them and trying to make sense to them. They’ll never understand.

I knew this would happen well before the game was announced, but I am genuinely getting 50% ‘you ruined God of War’ and 50% ‘you didn’t do anything, liar’ and it is going to be so funny to watch when the game comes out. If they hate it, I’m the game director. If they like it, I was an intern.

I like when I am reading fiction/playing a game and in the worldbuilding I find a word I have used/am using. Collecting, appreciating and searching for words is one of the joys of writing, and it’s nice to pass another writer and recognise that they too think a particular word is sick as hell.

i shan't be quote tweeting the original quote but this is untrue for many reasons, most notably that your entire life was labor from waking to bedtime. peasants weren't clocking in for 5 hour workdays in the field and then scrolling reels on insty all evening.
skeet: French peasants actually had time & energy to cook. A medieval peasant's workday was shorter & less exhausting than a modern workers.

Three panel comic. Panel 1: Thanos mocks a beat-down Captain America, “give up yet?” Panel 2: Doctor Strange begins to open a portal. Spider-Man appears beat up. Through bleeding teeth and a black eye, Captain America replies, “Not while we have…” Panel 3: Thanos, gobsmacked, exclaims, “Maya Angelou!?” Indeed, there she is - Maya Angelou, T-posing and floating stoically through the open portal.

The front of one of several huge buildings that somehow exist as a result of an idea on a red eye flight. Fucking hell. My visitor badge. Thousands of employees marching around as I stare in amazement.
