The Pope reminds me of a version of Catholicism I knew growing up as a young man attending anti-war and anti-death penalty protests, where I met elderly Catholics who shared their version of faith with me. I learned that Catholicism was about love and mercy for the weak, the condemned, and the poor.

This admin has spent years going after science. It proposed the largest cut in NASA’s history, about a quarter of the agency and half of its science programs. But last month, a groundbreaking telescope left the launch pad anyway. And the story of how it got there is our good news this Sunday.

Beautiful! @seamus.bsky.social inspired my bagel-making since I live in FL and can't find a decent bagel that's not just a 'bagel looking bread product.' I combined parts of the Montreal bagel basic recipe, with his old-world polish recipe & PROCESS. Best bagels. Ever.

It was such a treat to find these gorgeous little green cup mushrooms in the forest this morning. Usually all I can ever find is the bright turquoise mycelia in the rotting wood. Finding the thumbnail size fruiting bodies is pretty rare for me. Their colour is unreal. 🍄🌿

The Cowlitz Indian Tribe (a legal entity representing the Cowlitz people) has started a beaver kit cam to watch some young beavers get reared before relocation by wildlife services. It's pretty calming at times. Dose yourself appropriately. www.youtube.com/live/hy765ud...
A beaver kit lays against the side of its mother, who has her back to the camera, in a pile of beavers. They are atop straw and sticks inside of a fenced enclosure with a time and date stamp in the upper left.

As a sanity check, let's make sure in our cases where nonrelativistic math is good enough (low speeds compared to light speed) our new measure reduces to the nonrelativistic one we were using earlier.
The nonrelativistic limit is one where p is very small compared to m. If we were to explicitly add the speed of light back into the formula for energy we have $E_p = \sqrt{\vec{p}^2c^2 + m^2c^4}$. So we can say\\

$$E_p = \sqrt{m^2c^4 \left( \frac{p^2}{m^2c^2} + 1\right)} = mc^2 \sqrt{1 + \frac{p^2}{m^2c^2}}$$

We can now approximate $E_p$ using the binomial approximation $(1 + x)^n \approx 1 + nx$\\

$$E_p \approx mc^2\left(1 + \frac{1}{2}\frac{p^2}{m^2c^2}\right) = mc^2 + \frac{p^2}{2m}$$

Now imagine a particle moving super slowly compared to the speed of light ($v << c$). The momentum which is mass times velocity will also be tiny, and so the term $\vec{p}^2/2m$ becomes negligible compared to the other term $mc^2$.\\

If we set c=1 we simply get:\\

$$E_p \approx m$$

So then in our nonrelativistic case even using our new measure, we get $\int \frac{d^3p}{E_p} \approx \frac{1}{m}\int d^3p$ which lines up with our nonrelativistic measure earlier! It reduces to that at low speeds (using a normalization constant factor of 1/m).\\

Pen, watercolor, acrylic paint, black & white charcoal pencil.

One of my favorite pieces from my new book, Spooky Pants. Coming out this October.

A small cabin in the snow surrounded by trees. Two cabin people stand outside holding mugs of hot cider. One of them shouts out, “Big Fella, we got hot apple cider happening over here.” On the other side of the page we see Big Fella, a massive spider emerging from the forest.

Artist’s note: The spider only has 6 legs.. I made a mistake. However, I did read that some spiders can lose their legs in battle so maybe that’s what happened. Also, this drawing was probably directly inspired by the game Limbo. I love the art direction in it.
