usually if you ask experts why an empire fell they’ll say it’s nuanced and multifaceted, so i think it’s kind of cool that with America future historians will get to just say like “oh they took the idiot train to moronsville”

You can watch this Green Beret describe this experience in his own words to @vanhollen.senate.gov, and for us, and I cried. I’m not sure how you could watch this veteran tell this child’s story and not feel all of the emotions at once.

Brad Lander's "The line in the Democratic Party right now is not between progressives and moderates — it's between fighters and folders" is truly *the* best diagnosis of what's needed right now. It also has the advantage of being backed up by public opinion.

there is no jurisprudence at work here. the republican court believes that anything a republican president is presumptively constitutional, even if it directly violates the unambiguous constitutional text and causes total chaos in law and policy.

this court says that allowing EPA to regulate carbon emissions is a "major question" that demands congressional debate. but allowing the president to, with a flick of the wrist, end a straightforward constitutional right is something that must be allowed to stand?

A federal officer cannot be “doxxed.” The public has a right to know who is operating in our government, especially if they have the power to imprison someone.

Rogers Park is the best.
Scenes from a few days after the annual Artists of the Wall festival in Rogers Park, where dozens of local artists each get space to create their own mural on a long concrete wall/bench that spans the beach. This year’s theme was “All Together Now.” The bench pictured here is a stylized postcard that says “Greetings from Rogers Park” with each letter containing one item that represents the neighborhood: the pier light, a Pride flag, a cicada, a Chicago hot dog, a kite, a tree on the beach, a Chicago flag mug, two people getting engaged (maybe the artist?), a red-winged blackbird, and a fence.A wide shot of four painted benches. The one in the foreground is bright pink letters that say “Are are welcome (to sit) here! Especially SeaYaks” surrounded by roses and other flowers. A painted purple bench that says “Abolish ICE” in Fire and Water colors surrounded by monarch butterflies. At the bottom in purple letters, it says “Let’s be brave together.” A collage of four benches, one with a cartoon scene of downtown Chicago buildings and icons, one with an underwater scene called “Solidarity Forever” of a shark chasing a goldfish with dozens of smaller fish chasing the shark, one with a “Punkin’ Donuts” title in pink and orange with rows of little donuts underneath, and one with a smirking red cat surrounded by blue drones.

Grateful that Brad Lander is using his experience to highlight the biggest outrage; that ICE is re-arresting people who have been 100% compliant with ICE and the courts, with the goal of unlawfully stripping them of a court hearing to juice Stephen Miller's deportation numbers.

This is—it bears repeating—ethnic cleansing and a war crime. It feels utterly pointless to say, and roughly equivalent to screaming into the void, but the United States should not be supporting or providing any aid to a state that has ethnic cleansing as a policy position.

this is a letter to the editor from a high school track runner who came in second to a trans girl in a race. her state house rep in maine started talking about it. so she wrote this: www.pressherald.com/2025/05/14/r...
Rep. Laurel Libby, R-Auburn, recently used my second-place finish in the 1,600-meter run, and that of my teammate in the 800-meter run, to malign Soren Stark-Chessa, the trans-identified athlete who finished first.

One of the reasons I chose to run cross-country and track is the community: Teammates cheering each other on, athletes from different schools coming together, and the fact that personal improvement is valued as much as, if not more than, the place we finish.

Last Friday, I ran the fastest 1,600-meter race I have ever run in middle school or high school track and earned varsity status by my school’s standards. I am extremely proud of the effort I put into the race and the time that I achieved. The fact that someone else finished in front of me didn’t diminish the happiness I felt after finishing that race. I don’t feel like first place was taken from me. Instead, I feel like a happy day was turned ugly by a bully who is using children to make political points.

We are all just kids trying to make our way through high school. Participating in sports is the highlight of high school for some kids. No one was harmed by Soren’s participation in the girls’ track meet, but we are all harmed by the hateful rhetoric of bullies, like Rep. Libby, who want to take sports away from some kids just because of who they are.
