I do a podcast about Jane Austen with my friend Maggie! We talk about our love for Jane and give a middle finger to all the haters (that was our mission statement back in 2015 and we're sticking to it).

The people who run our government are are obsessed with appearance, unfamiliar with blue collar work, and worship President McCheese
In a Facebook post, the American Federation of Government Employees TSA Council 100, the union that represents the officers, expressed concern over the agency's "consequential decision.
The ergonomic chairs, the union argued, provide safety and support for officers who stand and walk on hard surfaces for extended periods.
"TSA is treating this matter like it is a privilege, the union said in its statement. "It is not; it is basic safety and common decency for the workforce."

Not a great economy alert! Wall Street Bets users think Palantir spiked today because The Onion story titled “Palantir Acquires Pentagon for $800 Billion” hit their front page. They’re guessing trading bots indexed the top post on the subreddit reddit not understanding source.

Not a hot take, I don't think - but I was reminded again after watching Miss Austen just how much the alternate life path, shall we say, of Edward Austen Knight is kind of there in the background of several (most?) of the novels.

Mr. Knightley musing about how he loved Emma from when she was a baby is creepy as all hell. Also, I made some gruel from the recipe on Max Miller's Tasting History show, and it was pretty darn good! Mr. Woodhouse is right to like it so much!

The Crofts in Persuasion are Austen’s platonic ideal of a married couple rather than any of marriages that any of her protagonists end up in. While she has some couples that are clearly parody, I’d say all of her couples have some satirical elements, except the Crofts.

RIGHT one of the things that Austen does extremely well is elucidate that some of the most reliable friends in your life might be people you personally find annoying. I think of Mrs. Jennings and Sir John and Mister Collins (who tries badly to do the right thing!) and Miss Bates

Headline of a Q&A in New Yorker formatting

Headline: A panicked middle-aged man refuses to tell me directions to the bathroom.

Subhed: Please, I just have to pee. I'm in a hurry.

By Isaac Chotiner
March 4, 2026Excuse me.

Oh, God. Oh, no. Holy shit. Get away from me.

I was wondering if you knew where the bathrooms are.

Look, I'm ... it's not a crime to scroll through your high school girlfriend's Instagram account. We remained friends after high school! I was at her wedding! It's only natural to see how she's doing.I'm in a bit of a hurry, and I'm afraid that if I choose the wrong corridor, I'll be late for my train.

I think they're down that way, but I'm actually from out of town. Please stop talking to me.Real quick, though. I agree that it's natural to be interested in an old friend, but aren't you afraid about the message you might be sending by liking a picture of her at the beach from 2015?

If that did happen, and I'm only going off your word, it was probably an accident. They put the ... scroll bars or whatever ... close to the thumbs up button. People have been complaining about that for years. I've been complaining about that for years.

In terms of what cures are being lost: - Epstein-Barr virus is perhaps the major trigger for multiple sclerosis - herpes simplex virus causes cold sores, genital herpes, infections in babies, deadly meningitis - shingles virus causes an intensely painful disease
"Moderna's CEO announced the company will no longer invest in new Phase 3 vaccine trials for infectious diseases: 'You cannot make a return on investment if you don't have access to the U.S. market. Vaccines for Epstein-Barr virus, herpes, and shingles have been shelved.”

It's not a new observation at this point but that wild Noem/Lewandowski story in WSJ really brings home the extent to which all the Trump 2 cabinet-level goblins see their jobs as flying private, doing short-form video, and screaming at underlings. They all hate each other and none of them can read.
