In the wake of the largest rollback of civil rights for a minority group in modern history, some Dems aren't asking how to undo it, they're asking for permission to support it. There has been a gusher of money poured from VC and SV types into Searchlight, Third Way, and The Argument to enable it.

The right-wing organizing around the Lindsay Clancy trial is growing and it’s frightening. A lot of people overlook these culture wars revolving around women’s issues, because, well, they’re women’s issues. But the right doesn’t. It’s how they regained such a massive cultural foothold.

A dark day for human rights.
four frame comic. first frame shows the logo of amnesty international. second frame shows jk rowling, smiling in the dark. third frame shows an empty classroom, with a pride poster almost falling from the wall. fourth frame shows a trans flag flying in the wind. text above all the images reads :
on july 8th, amnesty Inter-
national uk published a report
titled “A Growing Threat: The
Anti-Rights Movement in the UK.”
it listed 117 orgs, including anti-
trans and anti-queer ones
backed by jk rowling.
the backlash was immediate
and brutal : rowling pledged
to cover the fees of anyone
who wished to sue amnesty.
the report was taken down
within 48 hours.
this morning (july 31st), amnesty
fully capitulated and released
an apology to anti-trans orgs,
which, it said, should not have
been "collectively labelled as
anti-rights". rowling
celebrated.
an organisation that
bravely faced fascist regimes
and reported human rights
violations for 65 years has caved
to rowling's power and bigotry.
it's a dark day for human rights.

Sex Matters says gender-critical voices are being silenced. Yet when Amnesty International UK published research critical of them, they didn't publish a rebuttal; they threatened legal action. Freedom of expression isn't a one-way street. We have responded to Sex Matters' email:
For years, Sex Matters has portrayed itself as a victim of censorship. According to its public messaging,
gender-critical voices are supposedly excluded from civil society, silenced by institutions, shut out of
debate and denied freedom of expression. Every disagreement is framed as an existential attack on free
speech.
Yet the moment a major human rights ('non-anti-rights') organisation publishes research that is critical of
them, their response is not to publish a rebuttal, commission alternative research, or engage with
Amnesty's arguments. Instead, they boast that they were prepared to sue Amnesty International for
defamation.
The irony is difficult to ignore.
This letter repeatedly invokes freedom of expression, dialogue and human rights. It speaks of "constructive
dialogue", complains that Amnesty failed to engage with them, and insists that differing views should be
respected. Yet the same letter proudly declares that had Amnesty not withdrawn its report, Sex Matters
intended to drag one of the world's best-known human rights organisations into court.
Apparently, freedom of expression is a universal principle right up until somebody expresses an opinion
they don't like.
This has become a familiar pattern. When gender-critical organisations are criticised, they frequently
respond by claiming persecution. They argue that disagreement amounts to censorship, that criticism
amounts to discrimination, and that being called out for their campaigning somehow infringes their human
rights. But criticism is not censorship. Being challenged is not being silenced. And having your views
scrutinised is not an attack on free speech.
Freedom of expression cuts both ways. If Sex Matters believes it has the right to publish reports, lobby
government, intervene in court cases, criticise public bodies and campaign against the rights of
transgender people, then Amnesty International has the same right to analyse those activities and reach
conclusions that Sex Matters dislikes[...]Perhaps the most revealing sentence in the entire letter is the opening reassurance:
"You may be relieved to learn that since you have taken the Growing Threat report down we are not
planning to sue Amnesty..."
It is an extraordinary thing to write. A charity dedicated, in its own words, to defending human rights is
effectively saying: remove your criticism of us, and we won't take legal action.
If Amnesty's report was wrong, Sex Matters had every opportunity to publish a detailed rebuttal. They
could have challenged the methodology, disputed the evidence or explained why they believed Amnesty's
conclusions were mistaken. Instead, their opening gambit was to announce that litigation had been on the
table.
For organisations that so often warn about a "chilling effect" on gender-critical speech, they appear
remarkably comfortable creating one for everyone else.
The right to freedom of expression is not a one-way street. It does not exist solely to protect the speech
that Sex Matters agrees with. It protects the ability of charities, academics, journalists, researchers and
human rights organisations to publish findings that powerful advocacy groups may find uncomfortable.
If your first instinct when criticised is to reach for defamation law while simultaneously presenting yourself
as a champion of free speech, don't be surprised when people question whether your commitment is to
freedom of expression at all, or simply to freedom from criticism.
Yours sincerely

NPR is comparing a trans woman fleeing Texas for her personal safety with a conservative fleeing Seattle because he was annoyed with his neighbors. This is honestly insane both sides framing to a degree that is just blatant lying by omission.
A screenshot of an article excerpt that reads:
Three years ago, Jessa Davis had an epiphany: After she came out as a trans woman, remaining in deep-red Texas felt untenable. So, she sold her house in Odessa and moved to the liberal bastion of Seattle, Wash.
Davis describes herself as a trans refugee. Back in Texas, she says, lived in a "pretty hostile and frankly dangerous" place. "I had a lot of close calls, a lot of threats."From blue state to red
As Davis and others arrive in Seattle seeking refuge from hostile laws and rhetoric, some of Seattle's longtime residents, like Kirby Wilbur, have moved out, fleeing to conservative enclaves.
Wilbur also describes himself as a "refugee." He relates an experience that is a virtual mirror image of Davis'. In Seattle, the local conservative talk show host — who also briefly served as Washington state Republican chair — felt like a stranger in a strange land.
As he neared retirement, he and his wife Trina began thinking about an escape plan. A friend told them about McKinney, Texas, a conservative Dallas-Fort Worth suburb. Wilbur had never heard of McKinney, but decided to have a look.

One of the most under covered aspects of Elon going to the far right was how it was triggered by his daughter Vivian coming out as trans. Journalists just can't seem to grasp that this is one of his primary motivating factors.

**A screenshot of an X (formerly Twitter) thread containing three parts:**
 * **Original Post:** A post by user Syd Steyerhart (@SydSteyerhart) on May 31 reading, "We should never forget that if not for Vivian, Elon Musk never would have gotten involved, never would have purchased Twitter, Kamala Harris would be President and the Left-wing would have total instrumental control over the construction of Skynet."
 * **Quoted Post:** A quoted post from Disclose.tv (@disclosetv) on May 30 that reads, "JUST IN - Music icon Rihanna has enlisted Elon Musk’s transgender child to model in the latest campaign for a lingerie brand – DailyMail". Attached is a promotional photo of a young woman with long blonde hair modeling a black two-piece lingerie set. The top features white text with phrases including "QUEER," "LOVE," "LOUD," and "PROUD," and she is wearing a draped, crystal fringe belt over the bottoms.
 * **Reply:** A reply to the thread by Elon Musk (@elonmusk), posted 16 hours prior to the screenshot, which simply reads, "True".

I've spent years advocating for and consulting on state shield laws. It made my day that these shield laws upset Alito so much that he bitched about them in his dissent.
A screenshot of the first page of a U.S. Supreme Court dissent written by Justice Alito, dated May 14, 2026. The document title is "DANCO LABORATORIES, LLC v. LOUISIANA, ET AL. ON APPLICATION FOR STAY." The text discusses the impact of Dobbs v. Jackson and Louisiana's restrictive abortion laws. A highlighted section in the middle of the page reads:
"But Louisiana’s efforts have been thwarted by certain medical providers, private organizations, and States that abhor laws like Louisiana’s and seek to undermine their enforcement."A screenshot of the second page of Justice Alito’s dissent. The text continues to describe how manufacturers and providers facilitate the mailing of mifepristone into Louisiana. Two sections are highlighted:
The first highlight describes the role of "shield laws" in other states, noting that they prevent Louisiana from "visiting any adverse legal consequences on the perpetrators," including instances where governors have refused to extradite doctors.
The second highlight at the bottom of the page states:
"As a result, more abortions now occur each month in Louisiana than they did before Dobbs. By one count, nearly 1,000 abortions occur there each month."
