1. this is a US military issue, not an AI issue 2. Why is RNZ using a picture of Chinese soldiers for this "incoming threat" story? Every one of these decisions is either intentional, structurally inevitable, or rank incompetence from media - all 3 are a nightmare in the current info environment

Government, if it’s working well, puts the interests and everyday lives of those with less power over those with more. And does so with competence, repeatedly, on the small & big issues that those less powerful folks need and can experience. And that gets votes.

Don’t get me wrong, this isn’t easy, the list provided is incredibly impressive. But providing services that directly impact the basics that people experience in their everyday lives matters to folks. Government really can be transformative, contributive, and liked.

Chlöe Swarbrick Knows Something About Money
The Greens’ co-leader just edged Nicola Willis on economic trust. Her language about debt, spending and productive capacity helps explain why.

And we have the same thing with public debt. Swarbrick has pointed directly to Treasury advice supporting greater borrowing for infrastructure that expands productive capacity. Debt isn’t interesting just because the fucker exists. What debt does is interesting... yeah.

Spend instead on employment, electricity, infrastructure and productive capacity and you produce a rather different economy. So this isn't necessarily #MMT. But Swarbrick clearly understands the machinery she’s arguing about. Willis doesn't seem to have the same grasp.

On monetary policy, Swarbrick calls it “a blunt instrument”. She understands something else too: where money enters the economy matters. Fuck yes, I wish the rest understood this. If you pump liquidity through asset markets then asset owners tend to do very nicely indeed. It spreads ineuqality.

When she is asked about government spending, she gets past the ritual invocation of “taxpayer money” and asks the actually interesting question: How do we want to use our collective resources? And then: “You do not grow when you starve.” Quite.

She keeps dragging economics away from accounting abstractions and towards shit in the real economy: People. Labour. Houses. Hospitals. Electricity. Infrastructure. Productive capacity. Don't discount it, that distinction matters enormously.
