Duration extension—buying longer-term bonds—is not always rewarded. Since 1960, moving from cash to short- and intermediate-term bonds has incrementally improved returns. However, buying 7- to 20-year bonds would have yielded lower returns than 5- to 7-year bonds, with more volatility.
