And you passed the age Teddy Roosevelt was when elected president 279 days ago. You have a while to catch up to Bill Clinton and U.S. Grant though.

🍐This beautiful pear-shaped porcelain bottle from Japan is covered in a distinctive green flambé glaze. It was made by Ishiguro Kōkō of the Sumida Pottery in Tokyo, named after the nearby Sumida River.

I am two-thirds of the way through the second volume of her Collected Essays, and I think Virginia Woolf might be the most consistently great essayist (Baldwin at his best is better, but he is less even), dare I say, in any language.

I really love this chart. I'm guess that the correlation here (.85) is about as big as you would find for any other variable. Also, a less serious scholar than @tesler.bsky.social (namely me) would have made a crude Freudian reference to the slope of the line.
Chart shows a close positive relationship between Trump's 2024 vote and Google searches for testosterone boosters.

I am using the new Penguin translation (Lydia Davis) of In Search of Lost Time as a crib to read the original (I read a section in English, then a chapter in French). And as a crib, it is fantastic.

turns out being unable to think is not, in fact, a strategic asset when your opponent is specifically there to fight, instead of some guy just trying to enjoy a night at the pub who attempts to deescalate

Pete is lost in terms of modern war. I use the example of this outgunned Ukrainian army officer who successfully terrorized a Russian unit for weeks because she "did the math." At the time, someone commented, "yeah, in combat, 'I did the math' beats 'I can do 100 pushups' every time."
Ukrainian female soldier: Okay, I said the idea is this: There is enough time to empty one full can of 32 grenades and be gone by the time the return mortar fire reaches us. I did the math.

Trump is, like all people whose racism is simultaneously casual and bone-deep, racist in ways normal people don’t even know about. Brain like a slot machine for racism. Hispanics can fall real far. Black people have an extra tendon. Indians can see in the dark. Japanese people hoard matchbooks.

there are moral arguments against the death penalty in its ideal form but in real life you never need to get there. the prior question is "can the state be trusted to end the life only of the rightly convicted without torture?" and the answer is no

Here’s Chris Rufo and his podcast co-host addressing “the Indian question,” a reference to “the Jewish question.” That question was whether Jews could be incorporated into European society, and the Nazis were the ones who claimed to have developed the “final solution” to that “problem.”

A thing that was very clear at the time is that while it’s true that the United States has a lot of leverage, Israel is a sovereign nation with its own politics, and Netanyahu was, in addition to leading a coalition of aspiring genocidaires, literally going to go prison if the war stopped

The poor Christ is a scandal to the world and to many Christians. If we paper over the poverty of his condition, the unflinching vulnerability of his state, and his deliberately willed dependence on others, we disfigure him into the image of what we vainly want for ourselves.
