If your aim was to destroy academia in Australia this is precisely how you'd to it. Force unis over 3-4 decades into relying on foreign students as the only business model for survival, and then pull the rug from under them on the pretext of racism. www.theguardian.com/australia-ne...

For culture war reasons rather opaque to me, a good section of Australians who follow cricket do not recognise the rather obvious truth that Cummins is one of the best Australian captains (second in win percentage only to Steve Waugh, and arguably has a harder job).

The global left needs to be clear eyed about this. Comfortable middle class people don’t vote for far right parties because of material deprivation. Germans have more economic prosperity now than they ever have. Same is true for Americans.

Said a day after a white supremacist sought to kill people at a Hindu temple. Not a word about the anti-Indian rhetoric within his own party that has put South Asians and his own family members in danger. Instead continues to play footsie with people who see non-white citizens as guests, at best.

By contrast, when they moved the Egyptian mummies to the new location at Sydney University, the local indigenous had a ceremony, as a recognition that these were indeed human remains.

"He said he initially thought what he found was an Aboriginal person's remains. ""Who else's skull would it be?" Mr Breadsell said. ""I had it at the shed there [at my home] for at least a fortnight or three weeks."" That makes it okay, then.

you're absolutely right! it's unfair and mean to be a dick about dario's hypothetical child-killing moral calculus. here's an interview where he talks about claude actually helping to kill children and the logic he uses to continue with the contract for doing that

it turns out -- hear me out here -- people's moral hypotheticals tend to be put into practice IN THE REAL WORLD LATER. people who go out of their way to entertain and accept horrifying moral hypotheticals will actually do those things, a good portion of the time!

At this moment in history, I see a lot of people using criticism of Israel as a way to launder antisemitism into mainstream discourse, and I also see a lot of people use antisemitism to dismiss truly necessary criticisms of Israel. I see far too few people connect the dots between these two trends.

Also the case for universal healthcare can be made both on the basis that healthcare to the extent that a society can afford it is an acknowledgement of human dignity, and on the basis that diseases don't give a rat's arse whether you are legal or illegal as they spread.

I have never seen coverage of a live trial, one involving allegations of multiple sex attacks on multiple women, framed in a more distasteful way. It's not 'Fame under fire' it's a rape trial. And it involves actual women. And this from the *checks notes* BBC
BBC screengrab from within their Russell Brand trial coverage. Image of Brand in 70s-style aviator glasses, with earpods in, blank expression. Long dark wavy hair, black and grey beard, dark unbuttoned shirt. All on a fire red/orange and black background
BBC logo top and centre, underneath a subdeck reading: Fame Under Fire. Then the headline 'Russell Brand On Trial'.
The words 'fire'and 'trial' are coloured to look like they are glowing orange at the bottom

He wishes. De Gaulle had his share of bêtises (Sending both Leclerc and D'Argenlieu to Vietnam), and his moments of Machiavellian cynicism (e.g. using "Vive l'Algérie française !" as a way to get back into power), but can one ever see Vance embracing socialists and communists as De Gaulle did?

By this logic, Jim Crow in the American South was no big deal, because in other parts of the US at the time, Black Americans could vote. I don’t think someone this well educated and intelligent really believes that.

But I think this essay by @professormusgrave.bsky.social is on point. We are living in a very literal world when everything is expected to be telegraphed. People get genuinely upset, even on social media, when they are not told one is making a joke or being sarcastic.

I have a fondness for Judaism, and Jews in general, which owes something to the fact that my PhD supervisor is a secular Israeli Jew, and several of his friends are also mine. And that my PhD thesis was a footnote on/riff off the historical work of Amos Funkenstein.
