it is mentally, intellectually, spiritually, exhausting to be dealing with the same injustices for an entire lifetime when we know, observe, speak on or report on the structural & societal norms causing & worsening it all. (this applies to many issues & news stories. cornell 7 most on my mind.)

AI firms' campaigns to fleece universities (via their software-purchasing administrators) have been wildly successful, from both the standpoints of revenue generation and lapping up a ton of student content why would anyone expect different behavior with the scientific work done at universities?

If your magic "tool" is going to be this wrong why on earth use it? I don't get it? If its going to get the materials this wrong, why am I FUCKING WASTING MY TIME WITH IT
I recently used AI to dig through thousands of pages of notes and source material I had gathered more than 15 years ago, for a book on the history of the historical professions. While thinking about a new project on the ways historians adopted new technologies into their work in the past, I used it to scan my sources and it surfaced material I had completely forgotten about and accurately pointed out patterns — such as similarities in attitudes and language in sources written decades apart — that I had missed. Conversely, in that same scan of my source materials, I found the AI drew false inferences from historical documents because it failed to grasp irony and thus inverted the actual point of the author. In other cases, it failed to extract the most interesting material from documents because it was unable to “read against the grain” and capture critical hidden meanings. In each instance, I could recognize these problems only because I’ve spent years working with this material. All of this raises important questions about how to help students develop similar knowledge, experience, and disciplinary judgment, even when this new tool seems, to an untrained eye, to make those things unnecessary.

Musk is trying to normalize selective empathy (he’s said that empathy is the West’s “greatest weakness”), because an expanded and inclusive view of humanity is one of the common features of people with moral courage. To recruit ppl to his project, he needs them to think and be small, like him.

Making people think government should work like a business and sell you services through your taxes, and nothing else, is a strategy, employed by comfortable and entitled people who don’t want the government getting in the way of them taking advantage of other people.
