I had internalized some story I heard that the nose had been blown off by western invading armies doing artillery practice. These pictures made me check up on that and it turns out it was made up.
Wikipedia text describing how the Sphinx’s nose was not blown off by Napoleon’s troops, but was probably deliberately chiseled or broken off.

Exactly. This is such a lie. Email had a purpose. The internet had a purpose. Search had a purpose. Everybody loved Silicon Valley in the 90s because they made shit that did what it promised. Now 3 guys who never made SHIT have ALL the money in SV. They're scam artists. Not engineers.

Howard V. Brown did a lot of great 1930s pulp sci-fi magazine covers. Nevertheless, his June 1924 cover to "Scientific American" might be my favorite work of his, despite not actually being science fiction. I love the nonchalant surrealism.

Just to note, if we ever make a device that could be reasonably considered sentient, I hope people agree we need to give it full human rights, and that means agency/freedom. We can’t morally enslave it. And if *that* is a problem, we must not build that device.

Given rising interest in the rapidly strengthening El Niño event in the tropical Pacific Ocean, I've created a one-page fact sheet succinctly describing what El Niño is, this year's (remarkable) forecast, and potential impacts from California to global scales. [Thread]
JPEG version of a 1-page Factsheet: El Niño 2026-2027: A Potentially Historic Global Climate Event
By Daniel Swain, PhD | August 2026

There is a banner image depicting projected warming of the Pacific Ocean by early winter.

The content begins:
"What is El Niño?
El Niño is the warm phase of a natural cycle, known as El Niño/Southern Oscillation (ENSO), that occurs roughly every 2-7 years in the tropical Pacific Ocean. During El Niño events, the eastern tropical Pacific Ocean warms to well above typical levels. El Niño directly affects local climate in the countries closest to the unusually warm ocean waters, but can also indirectly influence the climate of distant regions thousands of miles away. During the strongest events, El Niño can profoundly affect climate even on global scales, causing temporary planetary warming and disrupting large-scale precipitation patterns..."

I don’t remember if I actually posted one, but here’s a favorite bit of comics that I like so much I saved it on my phone.
A three-panel sequence from the Hell Boy comics. In the first panel, Abe Sapien is looking serious but not alarmed, and saying, “Is that a monkey?” The second panel is a closeup of Hell Boy shouting, “He’s got a gun!” The third panel shows a monkey firing a revolver, with blam-blam sound effects.
