These fragments from a Roman villa in Spain are not from a mosaic but from a fresco. If you look closely you’ll see a grid of lines, many following the contour of the figures, much as tesserae do on mosaics. This trompe-l’oeil technique simulates mosaics. 1/ 🏺 1st-2nd c. Museo de Málaga 📸 me
Fragment of a fresco depicting part of a human face, mostly the eyes. Thin lines form a grid pattern, simulating the edges of tesserae.Fresco fragment showing a naked torso of a woman, her legs and pubic area covered in a red himation (cloak). Her right hand carries a basket laden with fruit, which look like giant globes of grapes. Grapevine leaves appear in the background. A Dionysian scene. The faux tesserae grid lines follow the curves of the body.Fresco fragment depicting some sort of half-human creature with wild hair and bare torso, gesturing upwards with his right hand and holding a branched stick with his left. The faux tesserae grid lines follow the curves of his garment and body.Fresco fragment with the torso of perhaps a god with golden skin, a red himation flowing outwards and partially covering his or her legs. Perhaps Dionysos?

If we could figure out some quality or feature that was common to all the states where this happened or, conversely, common to all the states where this did not happen, that might help suggest a strategy to correct and/or prevent this

Also I'm fairly sure it was the Dutch who conquered the world for spices. We did it for tea, and we're not exactly known for not drinking it. (Incidentally, Indonesian food seems to be to the Netherlands what Indian food is to Britain.)

It is quite possible that Labour and the LibDems will need to work together after the next GE. It would be a huge mistake for Davey to allow (very) short-term political advantage to make that much harder than it should be.

Tyrants view educated citizens as their greatest enemy. Slaveholders stopped the enslaved from learning to read. Nazis burned books. Dictators censor media. That’s why Trump is attacking education, science, museums, the media, and the arts – to prevent us from learning. It's Fascism 101.

To me, the thing that's happened is that the Working and Middle classes have effectively switched parties, and neither Party really knows what to do with it. An over simplification but the cause of that is probably threefold: i) The Tories tying themselves to a generational cohort (the Boomers)...

I really wish the movie had ended on a “where are they now?” montage. Which would have fit the Adam Curtis aesthetic to a tee and also would have been far more brutal verdict on the characters than the previous 100 minutes

A Taiping Rashōmon episode I came across last night, surrounding the death of one Adrien Tardif de Moidrey. On 19 February 1863, the Franco-Chinese Corps of Zhejiang, also known as the Ever-Triumphant Army, besieged Shaoxing, supported by the Royal Navy and some Qing imperial troops.

I think once black clad men are interfering with rescues at sea, we are past "legitimate concerns". Once they're attacking boats, and risking the lives of everyone on board, it's just thuggery. The Home Secretary's statement is on the side of criminals. There's no other way to read it.

Every once in a while I am reminded of the hill I absolutely will die on, possibly literally: The word 'dragoon' does not mean 'mounted infantry' in any kind of unambiguous way. Someone only familiar with 19th century history will not understand 'dragoon' as a synonym of 'mounted infantry'.

My attempt to resurrect Qing discourse based on something else that came up in my feed: It's a little odd that 'The Taiping War resulted in ~20 million deaths' so often elides down to 'the Taiping killed ~20 million people' as though the Qing didn't do at least 50% of that.
