If the Ukrainian army stopped fighting, the Russian army wouldn't stop shooting Ukrainians.

There's also a certain "popish plot" element, in that there is no way to seperate faith and culture from the myth of dual-alleigeance without conversion (of some kind), and even that still comes with suspiscion

I must confess I dropped SNW after S2 but in broader terms I do think Trek is at its best (read:good) when it takes itself seriously and runs with the campiness rather than lampshading it. Granted that is also my take on Gilbert and Sullivan.

The UT-Austin Core Curriculum Task Force is requiring that Gen Ed courses draw 50% of their readings from this list of 50. Unfortunately, it seems to think that the “Great Questions of Human Life” can only be explored through the canon of Western civ (token exception: Confucius).

Treating Confucius as synonymous with the entirety of schools of Chinese philosophy over thousands of years is considerably worse than just leaving him out entirely.

I do forget about Bluesky, and I shouldn't. So... who wants to see some WW2 maps, and hear about the mapmakers? This is a favourite of mine. Prome, Sandoway, Thayetmyo - 85: J9 - some of the Survey of India's fine work in Burma, published in (not updated since) 1929. Come on, isn't this awesome?!

I suppose it depends whether we define nation-states as aspirational categories or as real ones. We may not live in a world with very many 'real' nation-states in execution but there are clearly many entities that want to be, and it's the desire to become, not the state of being, that matters.

Well, no. Herbert outside his written fiction was an advocate of choosing people for office on the basis of random selection rather than election, with very short term limits. He was clearly quite influenced by revisionist scholarship in favour of the Athenian democratic model.

Jeremy Salkeld @enclavedmicrostate.bsky.social · 03/10/2026
which then manifested in both his written work and his public statements almost as an absolutist stance along the lines that 'nobody should have any power at all'.

Jeremy Salkeld @enclavedmicrostate.bsky.social · 03/10/2026
I think Herbert disliked the Act but not civil rights – put another way, his political leanings seem very distrustful of organised authority in general (while not outright anarchist he was openly supportive of Athenian-style systems of short-term officialdom by lottery instead of election)

It’s good to point out the ‘major gender row’ would not exist had JKR not been such a transphobe because that’s just her now. She claimed Imane Khelif and Liu are trans - which is not true and also shouldn’t matter - and whipped up hate, because that’s just her now

Again I am very much non-expert on Singapore but I came away with the impression that Singapore’s official line is that the British colonial period is a hard reset (which makes for an interesting contrast to Hong Kong where the official line is we were never actually a British colony ever.)

It depends to some extent on what you’re looking at; as I recall the substance of those conversations revolved around public history needing to embrace all of SG’s *current* principal ethnicities (Chinese, Malay, Tamil, Euro) in a way that makes telling pre-colonial history functionally impossible.

It’s sort of astonishing how wrong Braverman is on every level about what Englishness is and how it’s been constantly redefined and debated historically and culturally. And now I see she is also amazingly wrong about all other national identities too

I can’t say I’ve spoken to a lot of Malay Singaporeans over the years but from the few I have there is a sense that a notional commitment to multiculturalism undermines Malay indigeneity.

And yet you look at the 75% ethnic Chinese population, Mandarinisation, the adoption of Simplified Chinese, the way other ethnic Chinese communities in Southeast Asia see Singapore (rather than the PRC, interestingly) as aspirational, the way Chinese media companies (eg MiHoYo) abscond there…

The BBC switching its local resources from radio to the website has been disastrous for the business model of local newspapers, but you have to balance that against how good it has been for 'the BBC's opponents' and 'random companies who now get a PR hit on the biggest news website in the UK'.

The cultural logic of imperialism holds that Our Way is The Best Way and that everyone else should be made to follow it, and the economic logic holds that We Deserve The Best Stuff and can take it if we want. As you've said, it doesn't think violence itself is intrinsically desirable.

Jeremy Salkeld @enclavedmicrostate.bsky.social · 02/10/2026
This is basically Orwell's take on imperial conservatism vs fascism: Orwell's take (commenting on Kipling) was that imperial conservatism saw violence less as inevitable and more as an unfortunate necessity in the process of establishing The Law, the latter of which was The Point.

These fragments from a Roman villa in Spain are not from a mosaic but from a fresco. If you look closely you’ll see a grid of lines, many following the contour of the figures, much as tesserae do on mosaics. This trompe-l’oeil technique simulates mosaics. 1/ 🏺 1st-2nd c. Museo de Málaga 📸 me
Fragment of a fresco depicting part of a human face, mostly the eyes. Thin lines form a grid pattern, simulating the edges of tesserae.Fresco fragment showing a naked torso of a woman, her legs and pubic area covered in a red himation (cloak). Her right hand carries a basket laden with fruit, which look like giant globes of grapes. Grapevine leaves appear in the background. A Dionysian scene. The faux tesserae grid lines follow the curves of the body.Fresco fragment depicting some sort of half-human creature with wild hair and bare torso, gesturing upwards with his right hand and holding a branched stick with his left. Also I'm fairly sure it was the Dutch who conquered the world for spices. We did it for tea, and we're not exactly known for not drinking it. (Incidentally, Indonesian food seems to be to the Netherlands what Indian food is to Britain.)

Yeah there is a segment of the site made of smaller EN indies (AFAIK the largest VTuber on bsky is Nimi) but a vocal chunk also skews towards the whole 'Mori Calliope is an irredeemable person for unspecified reasons who poisons everything she touches' angle which is just very tiring to deal with.
