Let's talk eels & colonization! In the early 17th C. London was growing fast and needed more eels. The surrounding countryside couldn't provide enough. The Dutch importers could...but the English were nervous of the strong Dutch monopoly. So where did they look? Ireland. 1/5 🗃️🧪
Meme. Photograph of a Monopoly board game in Dutch. You're looking at the starting corner, seeing 2 squares in either direction. The directions on the square read:

Ontvang
Bij het passeren
f2000. - salaris
START

So now you know the (or at least a) Dutch word for start.

The game board is sitting on what is probably a table made of a light wood or wood substitute. You can see the grain running left to right, or right to left. Or perhaps east to west. It's hard to tell with grain. The board itself is edged in red, but fear not. It's only red paint, not blood. A blood-edged board would be a far darker shade of red. And a far darker game, over all.

Meme text reads:
"Who wouldn't be
Nervous?"

looking through the 2027 @historians.org program and this will be an interesting roundtable #medievalsky aha.confex.com/aha/2027/web...
Feudalism: The Utility of a Construct
Elena Shadrina, Princeton
Stephanie Leitzel, Cornell
L. M. Bondioli, Harvard
Frederik Buylaert, Ghent
Adam J. Kosto, Columbia
Stephanie Leitzel, Cornell
Abigail Sargent-Loy, Central Connecticut State

This roundtable will address the utility of the concept of feudalism for the study of medieval Europe and for comparative history more broadly. Once foundational to interpretations of medieval society, political economy, and institutional development, feudalism has fallen out of favor among medievalists in recent decades. Critiqued as overly schematic, anachronistic, or insufficiently attentive to regional variation, the term has often been set aside altogether. Rather than attempting to revive feudalism as a totalizing ideal type, this session seeks to reopen debate by reflecting on its potential as a comparative and analytical tool. Bringing together scholars of legal and institutional history and political economy working on premodern Europe and West Asia, the roundtable will use feudalism as a heuristic that may help historians integrate diverse strands of inquiry – economic, social, legal, and cultural – to develop a more holistic approach to the study of the past. Moving beyond historiographic debates that treat questions of lordship, vassalage, landholding, and jurisdiction as discrete institutional or cultural phenomena, the discussants will consider how the notion of feudalism can help root these in contemporary material conditions and labor regimes, foregrounding the intrinsic links between property, production, politics, and power. The participants will also ask how a critically formulated and historically grounded understanding of feudalism may help us identify parallel features in otherwise distinct societies, as well as whether, and how, feudalism can be meaningfully distinguished from other socioeconomic arrangements such as capitalism.
