The UG students where I work have no 'choice' over the modules they study, Jo. Back in my day I had a wealth of options. These students – who are lucky to study there at all since we don't recruit in history anymore – do the modules they're given.

At the risk of oversimplification, I do think a lot of the issues with bigotry on the centre and radical left are symbiotic, and that the rivalry between the two exacerbates those bigotries, underpinned by the particular nature of our electoral system which makes that rivalry so zero-sum.

What people fail to understand is also that Zionism was not just a plan/ideology for Jews in Palestine, it was also a vision for Jewish *diasporic* identity. Much of Zionist activity has always taken place outside Palestine/Israel and was about communal identity and politics. Hence the attachment.
