#medievalsky question: is "Frankia" (as opposed to Francia) more common in a certain subfield than others? I think the consensus is Francia but perhaps I am wrong?

The underlying assumption is that budget allocations in universities are ideologically neutral: that institutional investment just goes to wherever lots of students choose to spend their time. But this is not how it works. Admin decide what forms of knowledge they want to incentivize.

Shorter post this time about what I call "competitive history", or the frustrating trend to typologize and compare historical places, people, and events. Or, in other words, the "RIP to them but I'm different" theory of history #medievalsky

I'm as goof a ball as the next fellow, but I think we should bring back the concept of some things being serious. The rigorous historical essay will never be as engaging as the Tiktok that makes up a time when Jane Austen wrote a secret abolitionist novel and sent it to Phillis Wheatley to proof

Good to model for grad students too! I was very fortunate to have an professor notice my trepidation at a dinner and tell me explicitly to not worry about the price.

There's a lot to say about this, and other folks are saying most of it. I just want to focus on one thing: the claim about the relationship between universities and "the real world."

Was reading something this morning that made the argument: "people wouldn't care so much unless the stakes were high" and let me tell you, that is a misunderstanding of how much people love to argue about petty things

Adding to this: the early medievalists have always been very pleasant and supportive, from introductions and invitations. I assume other subfields are less inviting, but I felt pretty quickly part of the community (Bluesky/Twitter definitely helped with that)

I have a lot of thoughts about this. Its hard when you see other students (who you dont necessarily think are better) get showered with accolades, fellowships, etc. Often they've been instructed their entire life how to be an academic. Yet everyone else is told its because they aren't good enough.

Something that has come up as I work on lectures: it is often said that the humanities are 'slow' but the amount of material that is coming out means that even within one (1) semester some things are outdated/expanded because of new research. I think we underestimate the amount of new research.

People have this weird tendency to claim things are "for children" to downplay their importance when 1) they are wrong and it was intended for adults and 2) media can encompass themes resonant for various ages. It feels infantilizing and deflecting from engaging with anything deemed "unserious"
