It would be a shame if this was framed as “collecting all the lizards”. Bathurst are proposing the rip up and destroy the entire ecosystem, dig out all the coal, then reconstruct some vague approximation afterwards. It’s not about saving a few rare snails. But Bathurst wants to frame it that way.

Every scene with Sam Neill and Marlon Williams together in S3 of The Twelve (TVNZ+, leaving soon) has felt like a warm hug after a shitty week. A couple of the best kind of good sorts. Thinking of Sam’s whānau and friends. ❤️

We’ve known this was coming. By 1 May 2028 the NZ copyright term will be extended from 50 to 70 years after death, benefiting a few publishers and ensuring nothing will enter the public domain for 20 years. Worst case, it will be retrospective, clawing back things currently freely shareable.

Oh boy! NZ’s own Mickey Mouse law spurs debate on rights and wrongs of copyright
The law change will help local musicians, but it will also extend copyright protection for multinationals like film studios, drug marketers and medical software firms. Jonathan Milne reports.

I'm two weeks away from finishing a Masters in Public Management. Robodebt has been a key feature of several of the papers I've done - the damage done to so many people by automation of a process that should always be human (and humane). They literally teach us not to do this.

The only way to put the hot in a hot cross bun is via toasting. Cafés that microwave = instant fail for HCB101. Show me your hot buns.
A hot hot cross bun, toasted as it should be, on a white plate with a triangle of yellow butter. The Store at Tai Tapu gets it.

Goodnight. ‘The whole Moomin family had, as usual, hibernated for the winter and set the alarm clock to ring on the first of April. But the clock was old and not to be trusted, so it woke them up for Christmas instead. Since she was awake anyway, Moominmamma made coffee.’ ~ 🖼️ 🖊️ Tove Jansson
Illustration of The Moomins woken from hibernation to celebrate Christmas, there is a tree with candles, a large central candle, they are sat gathered in a circle together, there’s a little window with the night sky and a star outside and some skis and poles with a line of flags joined to the tree.

I always try to uphold the annual New Zealand tradition of the Nativicado.
Traditional Aotearoa Nativicado scene with avocados representing baby Jesus, Mary and Joseph, and the magi, overlooked by an angel with repurposed mince pie wings. The custom comes from the abundance of ripe avocados at Christmas and Kiwi frugality.
