On Wednesday I was at an event where lots of people were blathering about how ’AI’ could help respond to OIA requests. None of them had the humility to stop and reflect when a Deputy CE at a govt department said, “We’ve tried using AI for this and it didn’t work.” Emperor: no clothes #nzpol

This is exactly how I talk about it too! I've seen Gen AI try to write good comms and it's always completely terrible (see - most of LinkedIn, a bunch of the newer FB 'nz politics influencer' types.
Screenshot of a tumblr post reading: recently my friend's comics professor told her that it's acceptable to use gen AI for script-writing but not for art, since a machine can't generate meaningful artistic work. meanwhile, my sister's screenwriting professor said that they can use gen AI for concept art and visualization, but that it won't be able to generate a script that's any good. and at my job, it seems like each department says that AI can be useful in every field except the one that they know best.

It's only ever the jobs we're unfamiliar with that we assume can be replaced with automation. The more attuned we are with certain processes, crafts, and occupations, the more we realize that gen AI will never be able to provide a suitable replacement. The case for its existence relies on our ignorance of the work and skill required to do everything we don't.

12 years ago this week it was the NZ General Election and I had a very important message to share on Facebook
Facebook post reading "This week, we all have the chance to make a huge decision that will affect each and every one of our futures.

It will be a moment where everyone remembers what they did for decades to come, like the death of Princess Diana or September 11

Years from now, your children and grandchildren will ask what you were doing - did you take part? Or were you left behind, not joining in?

Don't regret your decision for the rest of your life. Don't have nightmares, haunting you of what could have been. Don't miss out.

This week, no matter what, make sure you go and see Step Up 5: All In." linking to the trailer for Step Up 5

The following public transport projects for NZ should be completely uncontroversial: - light rail in Auckland and Wellington - completing the electrification of the North Island Main Trunk and sparking the East Coast Main Trunk - Extending Te Huia to Tauranga and the Capital Connection to Whanganui

Shana tova umetukah - a happy and sweet Jewish new year to you all. We're in the first day of the year 5787, and here's hoping it's a better year for the whole world than 5786 was. We eat apples and honey to symbolise a sweet new year, so I'm gonna make a honey apple cake today.

Once again, Winston Peters and the government have actively chosen to be useless on Israel. We deserve better. The Palestinian people need better.
Tile with a quote from Asher Wilson-Goldman, Dayenu spokesperson, reading "Winston Peters has once again prioritised Israel over human decency by opting out of this UK-led statement against settlement expansion."Tile with a quote: "New Zealanders have the right to expect more from our government. Opposing genocide isn't a 'nice to have', it's a basic cornerstone of a decent society.

Time and time again, the Government has taken only the smallest token opportunities to criticise Israel's behaviours - banning visits from settler leaders who had no intention of ever coming here.

Winston Peters, Christopher Luxon and the rest of the government need to do the decent thing - expel the Israeli ambassador, introduce real sanctions, recognise the Palestinian state and speak out against genocide."

Black Ferns utterly dominant here against the wallaroos. Basically camped inside their half, scoring almost at will. Ruahei probably could do some better option taking with some of her chip kicks but otherwise pretty damn good all round.

Three weeks ago on behalf of a charity in the Treasurer for, I set up a new account with Kiwibank. Two weeks ago, when it hadn't appeared in online banking like it should have, I contacted them. I haven't heard back from them at all. Just followed up, but this is piss-poor.

As I gather Reddit are having another round of confusion, for when it spills over to here: Medsafe (clinical guidelines): most adults don't need a vaccine to avoid serious infection (hospitalisation with acute covid). Pharmac (legal entitlement): adults can have a booster every 6 months.

Was meant to do a few (non-urgent) things after work today for three boards I'm on but really wasn't feeling it so moved them all to tomorrow in my diary. That meant I wouldn't have time to go to the gym after work tomo, so I'm doing that now instead. Not sure if that's successful procrastination?
