64 years ago, on the 27th of September 1962, Rachel Carson's book Silent Spring was published. It handled the environmental harm caused by the pesticide DDT and the disinformation spread by the chemical industry. Carson managed to sway public opinion and even policy. #otd #history 🗃️

Great Willowherb (Epilobium hirsutum), also known as Great Hairy Willowherb, Apple-pie, Cherry-pie, Currant-dumpling and Custard-cups! The word 'great' refers to the plant's size and 'hirsutum (hairy)' to its stems and leaves which are covered in fine, soft, glandular hairs. 1/2

There is a season turn, turn, turn. The Long-tailed Tits always leave here when their breeding season has finished & return in the autumn to begin their hedgerow foraging. I'm not sure of the total flock size today - there were always birds away from the water. We're gonna need a bigger lid. 🦉🌿

Question: If I put a Tawny #Owl nesting box up in a large Oak on the edge of our local woods, will the Jackdaws who already nest in that tree move in - and stop any prospective Tawnies from nesting in it? Also, do Tawnies ever use the same site where they roost, to nest in? Thank you 🦉

Caryopteris is a fabulous late summer flowering plant.... and bees LOVE it! N.B. Female Ivy #bees (in video) collect pollen to provision their underground nests almost exclusively from flowering Ivy, but also forage on other late flowering plants for nectar... especially when Ivy is late to flower
