FATALITY
A tweet from Joyce Carol Oates: overall takeaway from the Curtis Yarvin profile is that there must be millions of smart-aleck show-offy kids who annoy their teachers and go on to annoy other adults through their lives with their “contrarian” pose that hardens to a carapace over their faces; until, as adults, they still harbor a delusion that, if there is a king, or a fuhrer, he’d be impressed with the guys motor mouth and appoint him to his cabinet rather than deleting him with a negligent swipe of his wrist as Stalin did routinely.

It was great speaking to Sam on this, and really demonstrates in practice how the doomerism narrative really does distract from concrete and current-day AI risks. I suppose faulty and unreliable models (the reality) just isn't as alluring as an AGI god (the fiction).

Good on them! But their last paragraph also highlights a problem we have arrived at: people (some) can't differentiate between LLMs/GenAI and npc AI or procgen in a game. I'm seeing it more and more online. Words matter and this is just another thing these mfers have tainted with their grift.

DVDs aren't low-tech. They're just things you can actually own, that won't disappear overnight, that don't require a monthly subscription, that won't suddenly get reedited, that won't start putting adverts in the middle and that won't sell your data to the worst people in the world.

If you're curious as to what The Terror Beneath is all about, this page should be useful
The Terror Beneath Reading List If you’re less familiar with Machen’s tales of horror it’s recommended you read the following (most, if not all, are available to read free online):
• The White People • The Great God Pan • The Novel of the Black Seal • The Novel of the White Powder • Ornaments in Jade • The Inmost Light • Out of the Earth • The Lost Club • The Terror • The Shining Pyramid • The Hill of Dreams • The Red Hand • A Fragment of Life • The Green Round • N WHAT IS WEIRD FOLK HORROR?
The taxonomy of horror subgenres is admittedly a bit of a mire. Machen’s stories are especially difficult to categorise, with hallmarks of cosmic horror intertwined with the rustic chills of folk horror and the science fiction trappings of weird fiction.
The Terror Beneath uses the term ‘weird folk horror’ to describe this particular ‘Machenesque’ genre, encompassing strange Otherworldliness, pagan terror and science gone awry. Because this game expands on Machen’s mythos, for want of a better word, having a term such as weird folk horror makes it easier to understand what sort of stories and monsters fit into this world. A ghost haunting a mansion isn’t weird folk horror, but a scientist building a machine to communicate with an ancient horned god is. A weird folk horror mystery will likely have a mix of the following:
• Contacting an ancient pagan deity in one of its forms (The Great God Pan).
• The slow realisation that the world isn’t as it seems, with the mundane giving way to the fantastic (A Fragment of Life).
• Discovering murderous hidden beings of folklore lurking in the countryside (The Shining Pyramid).
• Traversing the Veil between Earth and the Otherworld (The White People).
• Scientists mixing technology and occult rites with disastrous consequences (The Inmost Light).
• Discovering strange places that exist outside of space and time (N).
• Secret societies with bizarre and frightening rituals (The Lost Club).
• Ancient beings arriving in industrialised London (T…

I really need journalists to learn that every time OpenAI or Anthropic or xAI says that their model has broken containment and could destroy humanity that it’s a marketing pitch by companies running out of cash with high overheads and no profitable business model wanting more investment.

Below them in the composition are Dr. Watson as played by Edward Hardwikce and Jeremey Brett as Sherlock Holmes.
