I am appalled by the level of negative briefing in the Scottish Labour leadership contest together with a dearth of political debate. All candidates and their supporters have a responsibility to turn this into a serious campaign to address how Labour can rebuild in Scotland.

An easily delivered win which should be at the top of everyone’s Agenda. Lack of access to affordable and healthy food is wrecking the health of many and during school holidays the problem worsens. Public diners can address that and so much more to strengthen our communities.

The future of Labour in Scotland must involve an understanding that this isn’t entirely about the unpopularity of Starmer and UK Labour and that factionalism and anti-democratic practice destroys the soul of any party.

This is devastating news for Scottish manufacturing jobs. Any political Party serious about Scotland’s economy should look at how public ownership of industries like this could ensure stability and invest to produce the buses needed to fulfil public transport ambitions.

I haven’t commented previously on Anas Sarwar’s call for Starmer to resign. Not because I support Starmer, but the mess the Labour Party has been dragged into is more than one man and any call for Starmer to go has to be coupled with a firm proposal of what should follow him.

Cover to the 1956 edition of the Port of Leith Official Handbook giving details of the facilities & charges at "Edinburgh's Gateway to the Sea". An unattributed sketch depicting a busy quayside view of the harbour. @threadinburgh.scot flic.kr/p/2rUTMR1
The dust jacket or wrapper to a fine 1956 edition of the Official Handbook issued by the Leith Dock Commission giving details as to the "history and development, along with information on its trade, facilities... and schedules of rates, etc." This includes text, tables, photographs and plans of the port and the various facilities. The Commission was formed of members from the Corporation of Edinburgh, the Edinburgh Merchant Company, the Edinburgh Chamber of Commerce, the Leith Chamber of Commerce, shipowners and ratepayers.

At the date of publication of this the second edition, the port facilities had recently been expanded with two new deep water berths in the Western Harbour having come into use. The Port described itself as "Edinburgh's Gateway to the Sea".

The dust wrapper, or jacket, is an unattributed b/w sketch of the busy Docks and quaysides. Dominated to the right by a coaling tower, vessel alongside, and in the background a flour mill. To the left a tug and a small coastal vessel.

One of the worst aspects of political factionalism is the loss of moral compass, when people see everything through a prism of allegiance, rather than right or wrong, Mandelson is only one example and it is destroying politics and exposing how poorly we are represented.
