Some thoughts I shared while in the UK, where Foreign Secretary Ed Miliband has acknowledged that anti-genocide protestors "were right" but activists are still serving long prison terms for stepping in where their government failed. @astra.bsky.social

Watson, who spends that first Times journo Labour book loudly bragging about how he personally horked up that complaints unit horseshit hand-in-hand with some wingnut crank at the BBC because he was trying to decapitate his party in an election year, and also he was worried about racism or some shit

Absolutely essential reading. The specific focus is polarization research but everyone will benefit from this account of how anti-democratic forces disguise their efforts to rip out the very foundation they're standing on. It isn't 'just normal conflict within democracy', it's existential!

The Daily Mail used an image of ex-IDF soldier and right wing agitator Avi Yemini as an example of pro-Palestine protesters “clashing” with cops. Righto. It’s been more than 36 hours since this article went live and despite a campaign for a correction by News Cord, the image is still up.

On this day in 2012, Gillard made sure that single mothers with kids over 8 were forced onto Newstart rather than the single parent payment, setting the living standards on those kids and the safety of their mother back. Years later Labor raised the age back to 14, not the original 16.

It's even worse - he used to say his family escaped Castro, but then it was revealed his family fled the US-supported Fulgencio Batista. Now that it's advantageous to be a Western supremacist, he's pushing aside Cuban and going with Spanish.

This is a good illustration of how so much of AI theft isn't indirect (ie, data sucked into a model to train the chatbot) - it's actually **direct** copying, but *enabled* by GenAI. Of course it is: chatbots absolutely suck at creating good, new stuff.

I’m sorry, but this is a fantasy. The *entire point of all this* for ten years has been 1) Absolutely fuck you, the left does not get any kind of power, ever, 2) We will do and say literally anything, whatever it takes, to ensure this never happens and 3) Britain does what America wants, full stop.

Let me try this once more.
It was a choice.
EITHER the Greens adopted a slogan.
OR they could have joined the next govt, where they could push for an end to arms sales, sanctions, support for the arrest warrants etc.
It was never going to be both.
Which one makes a material difference?

Some people here don't seem to have understood the purpose of a political party.
It's not the same as a protest movement.
It is a vehicle designed to get into
government, to change legislation and make a material difference to the lives of people at home and abroad. 2/2

I have no strong view on a preferred outcome here - “stop the massacre and destruction” feels like the immediate priority - but I invite readers to note the result of decades of nice libs wishing for two states is their own governments assisting in genocide, ethnic cleansing and massive destruction.

a little louder for the cheap seats in the back
One of the biggest myths is that men rape by mistake. Like, "Oh, they need consent training." But research is very clear: Sexual violence is not a mistake. It is an intentionally made decision by people who know they don't have consent. They just don't prioritize consent over things like status, power, domination, and sexual gratification.
For my research, I got a certificate of confidentiality from the National Institutes of Health, so my notes couldn't be subpoenaed. One of the reasons I call them perpetrators in my work is because every single person I interviewed confessed in that context. The first question I would ask them was, "When you received that email from Title IX that you were under investigation, did you know what it was about?" Every perpetrator I interviewed said "yes." If sexual assault were a miscommunication, you would be wondering, What have I possibly done wrong? That is not the way that any of them reacted because they knew.

Cory Booker tweet:

I’m really looking forward to reading Brink and learning from his firsthand account of the extraordinary efforts to free the hostages, and confront the extraordinary challenges of the region.

All the brave students in America were already hounded out of a future for protesting against genocide, before this began. There are brave protesters everywhere, it’s just that the French have a modicum of actual respect for theirs, and so mainstream society actually bothers to defend them.
