Everyone say it with me: AI companies are ✨extraction machines at scale✨. They are DESIGNED to sift through a million stupid ideas per second to find the next golden egg they can monetize. And they are destroying our Earth, at scale, to do this.

The humanities have been calling out genAI theft since the jump, while STEM has rallied around “discovery potential”. I am *ONCE AGAIN* reminding EVERYONE that science is not the sacred cow, STEM isn’t the exception. They are going to steal our IP, too. We aren’t special.

AI has exposed the austerity con game in higher ed. For years, we have been told there is no money for students, faculty, staff, capital improvements, libraries. But somehow universities have suddenly come up with the money to pay for AI services??

Jess Whyte and I wrote on the shifting mix btw persuasion and coercion in monetary hierarchy and the effects of this shift on the legal forms of the dollar. TLDR: soft law, IL and legal cooperation are replaced by executive orders and tweets. It's open access! link.springer.com/article/10.1...

80% of AI news at this point consists of a company announcing “we wrote a computer virus” then there’s something about the apocalypse or regulation, then the next news story is like “we wrote another computer virus.”

The “exceptional” success of the superstar, the way Arday’s story was initially presented, not only fits with the growing commodification of education, it feeds a base desire that almost all of us have. But community is what makes academia worthwhile. kojokoram.substack.com/p/letter-to-...

one weird beef that I have is that it is not legally mandatory to write for a living. if you don't like writing for a living, maybe do another job? I hate editing, but it is part of the fact that I chose to be a professional writer for 40% of my job, so I have to do it?

I hate reality, because I don't care about international criminal law, I don't want to care about international criminal law, but also I need to make something of the fact that ICC judges are under sanctions and ICJ judges are not, and this presses hard against my worldview, and I have that.

Mamdani wants to make it easier for consumers to cancel gym memberships and magazine subscriptions…so, just like Trump’s authoritarian overreach.
But the appearance of overreach could also spook the business community, much of which is still uncertain about Mr. Mamdani. It could also invite comparisons to other executives, including Franklin Delano Roosevelt, whom Mr. Mamdani has cited approvingly, and President Trump, whose Justice Department has aggressively pushed the limits of the law in seeking to achieve the White House's agenda.

Why are car-centric transport systems so difficult to undo? Because automobiles represent the dominance of private property over public space. In this @urbancyclinginstitute.org essay, I look to history to uncover how we got here. #StealingCars

people often pit informal social rules (norms, culture) against formal ones (laws, regulations). But the formal rules don't enforce themselves and a culture of shameless impunity is not likely to produce, empower, or embolden the people whose job it is to do so
