How to "program" living cells.🧫 In 2000, physicists (incl. Michael Elowitz) made bacteria blink on-and-off every 150 minutes. Their experiment, which blended mathematics and wet-lab methods, launched the field of synthetic biology. Learn how they did it in my first interactive story!

For #WorldJellyfishDay and the first prompt, dangerous, for Blobfest month of #InsertAnInvert2024 it’s a smack of jellyfish! 🧪🐡🪼 The collective noun for a group of jellyfish is a "smack". This amuses me, because I imagine them smacking their tentacles together in some sort of deepsea high five.🧵
My linocut print with 3 jellies in white and blue on a black background with text “A smack of jellyfish”. These linoleum block printed jellyfish are printed on Japanese kozo, or mulberry paper. The block is inked 'à la poupée', meaning the multiple colours (blue-black, navy, pale violet and pink ink) are all inked at the same time, in small areas, and the print is pulled all at once. Each print is 15.5" by 12.5" or 39 cm by 32 cm in dimension.

I am now aware of no plate reader export formats Parsley cannot handle. If you have one, let me know!
100
Eszter Csibra @ecsibra.bsky.social · 16/10/2024
The latest update solves parsing for two of the oddest data formats: 1. Data that is unevenly spaced (such as data from SparkControl and Spectramax). 2. Spectrum data (which can possess up to 800 readings) presented in plate matrix formats (such as data from Spectramax).
100
Eszter Csibra @ecsibra.bsky.social · 16/10/2024
More info on the provenance and update history of Parsley can be found here: x.com/eszter_cs/st...
100
Eszter Csibra @ecsibra.bsky.social · 16/10/2024
Why do we need an app to do the parsing? Because every plate reader exports data in *different* unusable formats, requiring separate methods for parsing each. Writing separate parser functions is (a) time consuming (b) blocks accessibility to useful analysis tools to many.
100
Eszter Csibra @ecsibra.bsky.social · 16/10/2024
Parsing = 🎣data extraction + 🧹tidying + 🪡joining with metadata. Why is this needed? Because plate readers export data in formats that cannot be used for programmatic data analysis before it is tidy and attached to useful metadata that describes the samples in each well.
100
Eszter Csibra @ecsibra.bsky.social · 16/10/2024
A reminder: Parsley is software that parses data from plate readers, turning odd format Excel files into tidy data files compatible with all the programmatic software that have been developed for analysing plate reader data. (There are many!)
100
Eszter Csibra @ecsibra.bsky.social · 16/10/2024
🌱Parsley News: Our plate reader data-tidying software has been updated! gbstan.shinyapps.io/parsleyapp/ 🗞️Parsley now works with data from both Tecan Spark (w/ SparkControl) and Molecular Devices SpectraMax readers, which collectively export the most esoteric data formats I've seen.🧵
