I don't want to downplay how good we have it in Somerville. Even kids who have to switch from Brown to Winter Hill have easily 99th percentile infrastructure by American standards. That's great. But keeping schools in neighborhoods still matters a lot at the margin.

It's a national, multi-decade trend and it's true in places with both growing and declining student populations. There are structural reasons in the state funding formula that make it hard for a city to buck the trend and fix their smaller schools rather than centralize them.

At the nearest school to me in Somerville, MA, this is what the drop-off area looked like last Friday. This is the effect of having neighborhood schools in walkable neighborhoods with streets that are safe to walk, ride, and roll on. Your school drop-off could look like this too.
