This is what masked federal thugs are doing on the streets of America. This is the evil that America is doing in the name of Donald Trump. This must not be what America is, and we must make it crystal clear in November that this is not what America is.👇

Okay so @defector.com has had an odd glitch since the site redesign a couple of weeks back where the wrong photo and headline are often put together on the main page and I was going to ask them about fixing it but this just happened and as far as I'm concerned they have to leave it as is.
Screenshot for a Defector podcast episode with the headline "Consider the Emotional Lives of Scallops" only the accompanying photo is a white gormless stubbled red-headed UK singer of recent notoriety giving a flat smile to the camera while wearing a washed out peach top as beige as he is against a flat background. So, actually, probably a scallop anyway.

Big lawsuit filed by the family of Tierra Walker, who died of preeclampsia at 20 weeks pregnant after being denied abortion care. Argues Texas' abortion bans violate the state constitution's right to life and should be struck down. More soon on @autonomynews.co abortioninamerica.org/wp-content/u...
screenshot from page 60 of the complaint:
Not one of Ms. Walker’s medical providers sought to rely on the exception to Texas’s abortion bans or offered Ms. Walker’s life-saving abortion. To the extent Ms. Walker’s medical providers believed that she was never sick enough to qualify for the exception, Texas’s abortion bans, combined with the associated definitions of “abortion,” “reasonable medical judgment,” and “medical emergency,” are unconstitutionally vague in violation of the due course of law provision of Article I, Section 19 and thus unenforceable. See Paxton v. Annunciation House, Inc., 719 S.W.3d at 589.
208. In addition, to the extent Texas’s abortion bans and associated definitions were a proximate cause of Ms. Walker’s death, they violated her right to life under the Texas Constitution and are unconstitutional. Vernon’s Tex. Civ. Stats. ch. 6-1/2; Tex. Health & Safety Code §§ 170A.001-170A.007; Tex. Health & Safety Code §§ 171.201-171.212; Tex. Health & Safety Code § 245.002.
209. Finally, to the extent Texas’s statutory scheme, taken as a whole, cumulatively denied Ms. Walker her right to life without due process of law, Texas violated her right to life under the Texas Constitution

We've got a Muslim man running the most multicultural city in the world and making space for all the people in it. That's what cultural victory over fundamentalism looks like, it's a shame that there's a part of the population that couldn't identify a cultural victory if it slapped them in the face.

They don't give a shit. They don't care if our rights are taken away. They're ripping people off the streets. I'm not gonna tell you all the bad things! But I am gonna say it makes it hard for me in my body sometimes to have a good time. 'Cause it's hard to turn it off. And I was thinking that on the way here. I was like,

Jared Kushner is said to be visiting Israel next week to discuss Gaza but developments on the West Bank may be even more urgent. Ahead of fall elections, the Israeli govt is rapidly advancing new settlements with goal of encircling Palestinian cities, withholding customs revenues to bankrupt the PA, turning a blind eye to settler violence, and now the defense minister says he wants to turn over responsibility for law enforcement over Israeli settlers to the civilian police--who have no capacity to protect the population and are overseen by an extremist settler himself, the Jewish supremacist national security minister Itamar Ben Gvir. Now would be a good time for Trump to prove his claim that Bibi "will do whatever I want" by getting him to reverse course, because if he doesn't the West Bank could explode, as Israel proceeds with the de facto annexation Trump said he would not allow.

FYI there is no "real" reason why Rome "fell." Its power waned for the usual, mundane reasons: widening gap between rich and poor, inability to maintain infrastructure, incompetent leadership, pointless wars, endless persecution of marginalized groups who performed vital labor, etc.

It would be nice if, at the very least, the people reporting on this stuff properly contextualized it by explicitly stating that if the president can do this the union has ceased to exist. It's not hyperbole or figurative language. There is no union. "Unconstitutional" doesn't cover it.

This is a really good explainer about the mortality estimates around USAID. One big point is that dismantling USAID also dismantled one of the main sources of mortality data in some of these regions. Early indicators of mortality are very worrying.
I met with, first of all, a woman named Angelina David, who is the clinical manager in Panyijiar for the International Rescue Committee clinics. She was overseeing the clinics that were shut down and could tell me exactly what happened. It was a complete shutdown, and a scramble, because there were medicines and other things on the shelves they didn’t want looted, so they had to get out to these places—and they’re very far away. You have to travel, in some cases, seven or eight hours in order to get to the extent of what’s there.

I then went and visited some of those facilities, and I connected, with her help, to the subcounty chiefs—they’re called the payam administrators—who keep their own records of deaths. So one of the things I found was that their own records showed that they are measuring an over-all tenfold increase in child and adult deaths.

Wait. A tenfold increase?

Yes.
