I keep wondering if the sainted John Major is having second thoughts about his damning Andy Burnham as having had “great success with buses”. For someone who’s rightly and consistently IMO pointed out folly of Brexit, it must be painful to see the question finally reopened by such an inferior being.

Note: fieldwork was pre-PM speech but Labour lead the pack for 10th week in a row and in fact enjoy their biggest poll lead since we resumed voting intention polling after the General Election. The Tories and Reform continue in a close fight for second.

such a good eg of why political argument matters - polling previously showed over 60% support for keeping triple lock. Argue to unlock it *for something people also want* & numbers can change. (Obv can change back again if someone makes a good argument against, but either way, politics=argument)

@faisalislam.bsky.social UK Q2 GDP growth revised up to 0.5% by ONS. So top growth in G7 in q1, second in q2 to Canada, overall fastest growth of g7 economies so far in 2026. GDP per capita also revised up to 0.5% growth. Definitely defying the suggestion that the Iran war would hit UK hardest.

@bbcnewsnight.bsky.social Pol Ed Nick Watt: Looks like Andy Burnham going for something akin to the Australian system on the state pension, according to this IFS note from earlier this month. No automatic annual link with earnings but a link maintained over time.

While the triple lock has now been in place for more than 15 years, at some point a government will have to decide to move away from it towards a more predictable and less costly way of uprating the state pension over time. As discussed in the IFS Pensions Review, one attractive option would be the system used in Australia, where the level of the state pension increases in line with average earnings in the long run, but temporary protection against inflation is provided when it is in excess of average earnings growth.
