I'm a so pleased that the exhibition I co-curated with @cerihoulbrook.bsky.social is now open at the Chelsea Physick Garden. Running until the 15th Nov, it explores the autumnal plants of the garden through the work of pioneering botanical illustrator Anne Pratt.

Every once in a while the Gregory Hines and Mikhail Baryshnikov dance from White Nights appears in my timeline. I love it so much - the contrasting styles of two phenomenal dancers. Teenage me loved it and I still do.

Being at Chalke History Festival reminds me yet again how interconnected university-based history and other forms of history-making are. The thing we do in one place explicitly supports the thing we do in another. University cuts, closures and job losses harm the entire history eco-system.

Economists talk about 'scarring' - long-term effects on a cohort of some short-term phenomenon like a bout of unemployment: even if we pull out of this UK HE crisis soon (doubtful), the whole sector will be scarred for life. (1/2)

Preparing to say goodbye to the mighty BBC Radio 4 Long Wave broadcast. The first service began 101 years ago. The transmitters at Droitwich, Westerglen and Burghead will be switched off at 0100 BST on Saturday. The 200 metre long AM signal at 198 Khz goes right through you and sounds fabulous!

I know people like to joke about the lack of air conditioning in the UK, but I work in a listed building where we are not allowed to install AC. Some of my colleagues have been teaching on a summer school in minimum 35-degree heat and high humidity all week. It’s utterly miserable for everyone.

the media and voter messaging should be this: the current government and the government in waiting do not want your children to be able to go to university, they will not support people in the UK to do original research, they do not care about job losses in one of the largest sectors in the economy
