a new job market paper! using surveys from 10.4 million college students over 40 years, I study the role of ideology in career aspirations. I show that ideology structures what careers people want, a pattern much stronger among high-income students. see here: tkeskinturk.github.io/aspirations.pdf
Ideology as a Luxury Good in Occupational Choice
Turgut Keskintürk
Duke University

Abstract
Career aspirations are formed long before people enter the labor market, but whether and how political ideology is part of that formative process remains poorly understood. Using yearly surveys of 10.4 million college freshmen entering U.S. institutions between 1976 and 2015, I show that ideology systematically structures occupational aspirations. This pattern is two to three times larger among students from the highest socioeconomic backgrounds than among those from the lowest. To explain this difference, I propose a luxury-good interpretation: political congruence, the match between one's politics and an occupation's perceived ideological orientation, constitutes an occupational amenity whose importance increases with material security. This, I theorize, makes ideology an expressive resource for life choices, though one that is unequally distributed.

New paper by Donahue & Reich, forthcoming in AJS. Using 18 years of Florida voter records, they find Republicans significantly more likely than Democrats to shift Hispanic→White. The Race of Politics: Partisan Affiliation and Ethnoracial Boundary Crossing*

Abstract

While a long literature has explored ethnoracial patterns of party affiliation and realignment, this paper takes an inverse approach, examining whether in- dividuals’ political affiliations predict shifts in their ethnoracial self-identifications. Using eighteen years of individual voter records from Florida, we show that rates of ethnoracial reidentification among voters are substantively large and patterned by party affiliation. Republicans are significantly more likely than Democrats to change their ethnoracial identities from Hispanic to non-Hispanic White, while Democrats are significantly more likely than Republicans to change their ethnoracial identities from non-Hispanic White to Hispanic. Even after accounting for differences in perceived race and other possible confounding factors, we find large and stable differences between Democrats and Republicans in both the rate and direction of ethnoracial reidentification, suggesting that partisans may both differently value and differently claim Whiteness and non-Whiteness.
Chart showing the average marginal effect of Republican party affiliation on the direction of ethnoracial reidentification, after adjusting for individual and contextual characteristics. Republicans are about 2 percentage points more likely than Democrats to reidentify Hispanic→White, and about 0.5 points less likely to reidentify White→Hispanic. Both effects are precisely estimated with tight confidence intervals. Sample: Florida voters who made any change to their voter records, 2006–2023.

Political elites' partisan beliefs about climate change
OPEN ACCESS
Alexander C Furnas'*®, Timothy M LaPira? O and Salil D Benegal' ©

Addressing climate change requires political elites to share a basic set of facts about climate science, yet political elites in the United States are divided in their views about climate change. We document

this using the first large-scale survey of over 3,500 U.S. political elites-including elected officials, staffers, regulators, lobbyists, and policy professionals—to assess the partisan divide in beliefs about climate change held by political elites. We show near-unanimous agreement among the Democratic elite on the scientific consensus that global warming is occurring, primarily caused by humans, and widely recognized by scientists. In contrast, substantial minorities of Republican elites reject these scientific facts, with fewer than half affirming anthropogenic climate change and nearly one-third endorsing a climate-related conspiracy theory. Comparing elites to the general public, we find that political elites are more aligned with climate science, but partisan gaps among elites are as wide as those observed in mass opinion. Regression analyses show partisan identity explains far more variation in elite climate beliefs than ideology, trust in science, or broader conspiratorial predispositions. These findings suggest that partisan polarization among elites reflects not only strategic electoral behavior but also privately held attitudes.

🚨New pub alert!🚨 Now available open-access in @journal-of-comm.bsky.social, we (w/ @dkreiss.bsky.social, @danlane.bsky.social, & @shannimcg.bsky.social) critique political communication's "Identity Turn" and offer instead a foundation for studying #polcomm from a *group* perspective. 🧵
Abstract: Recent political communication scholarship finds that groups and identities play a central role in the crises faced by political and media systems globally, particularly in democracies. Yet an individualist orientation in the literature has resulted in key theoretical and conceptual limitations, preventing a broader group-centric theoretical framework from emerging. We synthesize disparate bodies of theory on groups, politics, and communication to offer three basic propositions underlying a group theory of political communication. First, it is the group—not the individual—that is the fundamental organizing unit of social and political life. Second, groups are constituted through communication, which is central to how they define their politics. Third, groups and politics are reciprocally influencing forces through political communication, oriented around power. We offer a framework for studying the role of groups in political communication at the micro, meso, and macro levels, providing a concrete agenda for the study of groups in political communication.
