ALSO, I would LOVE Lee Child to write a Romantic Era thriller - Byron Said Too Much - in which Byron brawls across Europe righting wrongs and wooing men and women and writing poems

My run over recovery film watch continues with a rewatch of School of Rock - this time, I noticed how much of an asshole Dewey Finn is at the start of the film which had been obfuscated in earlier viewings by Jack Black’s huge charisma - still, a delight! A classic get the band together film 🖤

I once wrote a paper about the supernatural in Jane Eyre, and guys, Jane Eyre can totally be read as a fantasy novel in which Jane herself is a fairy changeling trying to survive and adapt as a human. Despite being accosted by ghosts in the Red Room, and that witch from the attic.

Got my urn copy of Kate Scarth’s brilliant book I blurbed 🖤🖤🖤
Romantic Suburbs cover featuring an illustrated lady with huge flowers in her hair and a but rely on the orange flower ITS MY BLURB BABY!

"Kate Searth's Romantic Suburbs constitutes the watershed moment of a major publication on the suburban scene of Romantic-era British culture it calls for in its introduction. Focusing on Romantic-period women's writing as the space in which suburban place-making is most fully imagined, Searth argues that novels by Jane Austen, Charlotte Smith, and others position the suburbs as inclusive and democratic spaces, utopias, and fantasies. Her final chapter, exploring what is occluded in suburbia's Romantic fantasy, offers a necessary account of both suburbia's and Romanticism's continuing imbrication in colonial politics and violence, balanced with their potential to think, dream, and live otherwise." Writing Big and Small after Gulliver
A Creative Workshop
Dr Swift
First published in 1726, the first two books of Jonathan Swift's Gulliver's Travels turn on a single trick played in opposite directions: shrink the world around its narrator, and even the smallest objects and gestures of Lilliputian court life become petty and absurd; leave him ordinary-sized among the giants of Brobdingnag, and the plainest objects, and the bodies of the people who use them, become overwhelming, even repulsive, at close range. This workshop invites participants to think about their chosen objects or subjects in both big and small ways, using inspiration from the Special Collections holdings to write other worlds into existence.
Date: Wednesday 28 October 2026
Time: 2.00pm - 4.00pm
Venue: Special Collections & Archives, Templeman Library, University of Kent,
Canterbury
Led by: Dr Declan Kavanagh
Places limited - materials provided - all levels welcome
