My run over recovery film watch continues with a rewatch of School of Rock - this time, I noticed how much of an asshole Dewey Finn is at the start of the film which had been obfuscated in earlier viewings by Jack Black’s huge charisma - still, a delight! A classic get the band together film 🖤

Got my urn copy of Kate Scarth’s brilliant book I blurbed 🖤🖤🖤
Romantic Suburbs cover featuring an illustrated lady with huge flowers in her hair and a but rely on the orange flower ITS MY BLURB BABY!

"Kate Searth's Romantic Suburbs constitutes the watershed moment of a major publication on the suburban scene of Romantic-era British culture it calls for in its introduction. Focusing on Romantic-period women's writing as the space in which suburban place-making is most fully imagined, Searth argues that novels by Jane Austen, Charlotte Smith, and others position the suburbs as inclusive and democratic spaces, utopias, and fantasies. Her final chapter, exploring what is occluded in suburbia's Romantic fantasy, offers a necessary account of both suburbia's and Romanticism's continuing imbrication in colonial politics and violence, balanced with their potential to think, dream, and live otherwise." Götterdämmerung imagines apocalypse as hinging on populist disinformation (in Hagen’s manipulation of the Gibichungs), violence against women (in Brünnhilde’s various humiliations), & a willing blindness to climate shocks (from destroying the world ash to refusing reparations to the rhinemaidens)
Brünnhilde refuses to listen to her Valkyrie sister’s plea to return the ring to the Rhine maidens in Boulez’s version of Wagner’s Ring

Academics, share your best footnote! Here’s one of my favourites, and possibly my pettiest.
§ This defence of my use of Lacanianism is prompted by one of my anonymous reviewers suggesting that I excise my engagement with Lacan entirely. More informally, as a friend commented to me, "reviewers only do this with Lacan. No one suggests you get rid of your feminist or Marxist methodology."

TV listing for Thursday reading

Sandi's Ireland: A Literary Journey
More4, 9pm
No stately, plump Buck Mulligan coming from the stairhead, not in episode one of this two-part travelogue anyway. But Sandi Toksvig, aided by Marian Keyes, does a grand job of conjuring Ireland's rich literary heritage. Travelling the isle, she brings to evocative life Jonathan Swift, WB Yeats and "forgotten giant" Maria Edgeworth. CMc

With apologies for wonky photo but you can get the gist?
Recipe for pop tarts from puff it up cook book (poorly photographed and transcribed - sorry!)

These are a fun recipe for people of all ages. Get creative with different sprinkles, and experiment with different fillings; salted caramel, jam, nut spreads or butters are all delicious options.
Preheat the oven to 200°C/180°C fan/400°F and line a baking tray with baking parchment.
Mash the raspberries slightly in a bowl. Unroll the puff pastry and cut lengthways into two strips, making one 1cm (½in) bigger than the other. Cut each strip into four equal-sized pieces.
Divide the raspberries between the slightly smaller pastry pieces, spooning them into the middle and leaving a 1.5cm (kin) border right round the square. Drizzle 1 tablespoon of peanut butter over the top of each pile of raspberries, then brush the border with the egg. Lay the slightly bigger piece of pastry on top, pressing down around the edge with a fo to seal. Place onto the baking tray, brush all over with the and transfer to the oven to bake for 20-25 minutes.
In the meantime, make the icing. Mix the icing sugar wit enough water to make a thick but drizzle-able consister
Remove the pop tarts from the oven and leave to cool completely. Drizzle over the icing and decorate with s to finish.
DECORA
