The poet, writer and monk Thomas Merton wrote a deliciously subversive "confession of crimes against the state" in 1960-- in middle of the Cold War, as the McCarthy era was just beginning to ebb, and the Vietnam War had already been underway for five years. He knew from jingoism. This is a treat:

I know a lot of people who know Merton from "The Seven Storey Mountain" and use his early work to claim that spirituality should be a kind of withdrawal from society and its harms. So I think it's valuable to look at his other work, and see how outspoken and committed he was to working in the world

Not to piss on anyone’s chips, but Hookland won’t be doing any ‘31 days of spookiness’ malarkey. Halloween is not that big a thing in a county that does hauntings in a matchbox every day of the year. The gothic is not tinsel on this ghost soil, it’s a bone tattoo.

Drama queen was probably a bullshit term for me to use. I was trying to convey the depth of Brod’s relationship with Kafka and his probable insight into F. K. wishes. Presumptuous, for sure.

Kafka was a bit of a drama queen about destroying his own work. He was two-minded about it and I think Brod knew this.

How much would American culture be depleted from the loss of her work? It would be an unfathomable loss. But, one can imagine her being horrified to ‘be seen’ by so many ‘others’.

Oh Wendell Berry, another great elder become ancestor 🪔. So many favorite writings by him, holding this as reverence and passageway. “.. Go without sight, and find that the dark, too, blooms and sings, and is traveled by dark feet and dark wings”. 📷: Guy Mendes.
A black-and-white photo ny photographer Guy Mendes of an older
white man named Wendell Berry, sitting on the Banks of the river. He’s wearing a collared shirt and Dungaree kind of pants with lace up boots and a baseball hat. His expression is open and peaceful looking off into the shoreline with a slight smile. He has a little dog, resting her head on his knee. Overlaid the photo is his poem. “To Know The Dark by Wendell Berry
To go in the dark with a light is to know the light.
To know the dark, go dark. Go without sight, and find that the dark, too, blooms and sings, and is traveled by dark feet and dark wings”
