The typical household gas bill has gone up by 33% since April. Clean renewable energy generation is Scotland's best path to energy security and lower bills.
Carbon Brief. Wind and solar save UK from gas imports worth £5.9bn during Hormuz crisis. Wind and solar have generated a record 41% share of the UK’s electricity needs in 2026 to date, compared with 25% from gas.

This ancient Greek figure from the 2,500 year-old Douris Cup looks uncannily like someone working on a laptop! 😲 💻 He’s actually writing with a stylus on a hinged wax writing tablet! The technology has changed, the posture has not! 😂 Altes Museum, Berlin 📷 by me
My photo shows detail from an ancient Greek red-figure kylix (drinking cup) of a young man shown in profile seated on a stool facing right. He wears a knee length cloak (himation) over his left shoulder, which is shown in folds around his waist and upper legs. His right shoulder, chest, and arms are bare. His dark hair is short, and he wears a band around his head. He is looking down at an open rectangular wax writing tablet which he is supporting in his left hand above his lap. In his right hand he holds a metal stylus pen poised over the writing tablet. The wooden writing tablet is hinged like a book and, from this angle, resembles a modern laptop. The figure is part of a scene depicting school lessons in ancient Athens, painted by Douris around 480 BC. On display at the Altes Museum in Berlin.

In the 1970s over 30% of the population lived in council housing, and I was one of them. In 1978 we could easily run a household on £60 a week, took regular holidays, and had zero personal debt. All because the landlord didn't take most of our income.

Wouldn’t disagree with much that Burnham said today in what was an excellent speech. But… 90% of the substance is focused on England catching up with Scotland (Bus fares, rail nationalisation, water in public control, free social care and PR in elections). Not much for Scotland except Unionism!

Most of Burnham's promises were for policies to be introduced after the next GE, the national care service, reform of the voting system, closer ties with the EU, all put off until after the next GE - political code for ‘never’. It was a very traditional Labour speech, the jam is always tomorrow.

What Newsnight should have taken away was that it shouldn't adopt tabloid narratives unquestioningly and made the appropriate correction. What it did instead was to report the correction as if it were gossip and go "OOOOOH! THEY'RE VERY SENSITIVE!" What? To accuracy? You used to be, too, BBC.
