The internet says that’s “a German saying, since WW2”. I have no source, even if it makes sense. What I *have* heard my German friends say is: “the only argument a Nazi understands comes in 9mm”.

That is exactly what we are discussing here: the claim that a LLM feels pain and can be abused itself and not just used as a tool to abuse others. LLMs do not understand what facts are, not do they care about what facts mean. Their "apologies" for "mistakes" are coded & not actual sorrow.

We don't know the requirements for intelligence and can't rule out sentient software as a possibility. What we can say is that this most definitely isn't it (nor anywhere close). I'd be astonished if it can be done without quantum computing but we do not know.

In other words, it is the job of scientists to devise experiments that can test their claims, to always be cautious abt what they are claiming, and to critically evaluate the claims of other scientists. By these well-established standards, no serious science is happening behind Anthropic's claims.

And pain and the capacity to feel it it have been linked to moral capacities in racialised populations. Which brings us full circle back to Sylvia Wynter as we ask who the human subject of human rights is; what claims we’re making on moral capacity and humanity when we claim machines feel pain.

Day 11 of Auctober! Self-accommodating is something I've had to learn isn't shameful. I suck at tying shoe laces, so I stopped wearing shoes with laces. Now getting my shoes on is a breeze! I can't balance on a bike, so I started riding a trike. Now I actually get to enjoy cycling around! #auctober
A one panel comic titled Auctober and subtitled Self-Accommodation.
Text on the top says "You don't have to have shoe laces if tying them is too difficult." Text at the bottom says "There's no shame in self-accommodating."
In the middle, Honeydew lifts up their foot, reaches down, and pulls on a hoop on the back of their laceless shoe so they can slip it on.

A one panel comic titled "Auctober" and subtitled "Neurodiversity".
A yellow bucket labelled "Neurodivergent" sits at the bottom of the panel. Several raindrops come down into the bucket. The raindrops are labelled "Autism, bipolar, plurality, ADHD, dyslexia, epilepsy, Tourettes, OCD, Depression, dyscalculia, down syndrome, anxiety, Williams syndrome, BPD, schizophrenia."

Day 9 of Auctober! I have my theory as to why autistic people are more likely to be queer. My thought is that we tend to care less about societal norms, so we're less likely to hide in the closet like neurotypicals tend to do. #auctober
A one panel comic titled "Auctober" and subtitled "Queer".
Honeydew cheerfully holds two flags. One is the nonbinary flag, with yellow, white, purple and black stripes, and the other is the demi-aroace flag, with a black triangle, and white, purple, green and grey stripes.
Honeydew says "Autistic people are statistically more likely to be queer than the general population."
