I am still digesting Jason Arday's book, Great and Unfortunate Things. It's not easy to read what he stood for and know how it ended. Here's just one little snippet just to give a flavour. There is so much humanity here.

To this day, even as someone with a relatively senior position at a university, if I go into a boardroom and there's a swivel chair, I'll take the opportunity to swing around on it. That's the great thing about the autistic imagination: a swivel chair isn't just a chair - it's a fairground ride, an opportunity to release tension. I might have learned to suppress a meltdown but not a yearning for a swivel in a chair.

Is anyone at any university looking into how we can ground "academic freedom" in a robust defence of our civil liberties, so it cannot be hijacked by "race realists" or TERFs etc. I also want to be clear that TERFs and racists aren't just non-inclusive, their claims are not academically defensible.

Fifteen or so Oxford people have signed that pro-Cofnas letter in defence of his "academic freedom". What that man does is laughable 19th century racial science - it is not research protected by academic freedom. Also not a concidence many signatories are major transphobes - it's the same playbook.

Jason was part of a course on decolonisation that we launched at Worcester College, @ox.ac.uk when I used to work there. He was introducing decolonial thought to students for the 1st time at one of the most horribly colonial institutions in the world and he was fantastic at it - they adored him.

Actually if you say "Cofnas is loathsome but I agree with him on Black people and EDI" I fear you might also be loathsome and racist. Arday was harassed in a way that *no one* should have to endure. He was investigated by institutional processes that cleared him. That should have been the end of it.
