One of the most beautiful parts of my Yom Kippur came at the very end: N’eilah in Prospect Park. After a full day of prayer, mourning, remembrance, and community, a few dozen of us gathered as dusk slowly turned into night.
At night in Prospect Park, a group of people dressed mostly in white stand closely together in a line beneath dark trees. In the foreground, a person holds up a rainbow twisted candle, its bright flame illuminating nearby faces and clothing.

On Nov. 21, 1922, in the NY Times' first story about an up-and-coming politician named Adolf Hitler, the Times said "Hitler's anti-Semitism was not so genuine or violent as it sounded." Yes, really. We should remember that when news media dismiss Trump's insane rhetoric. Take. It. Seriously.
"But several reliable, well-informed sources confirmed the idea that Hitler's anti-Semitism was not so genuine or violent as it sounded, and that he was merely using anti-Semite propaganda as a bait to catch masses of followers and keep them aroused, enthusiastic and in line for the time when his organization is perfected and sufficiently powerful to be employed effectively for political purposes."

JOIN US ON SEPTEMBER 10 (NOT THE 11TH):
September 11, 2026, marks the 25th anniversary of the attacks on the World Trade Center in New York City on Sept 11, 2001. From 2002-2017, the Children of Abraham Peace Walk brought Jews, Christians and Muslims together with others of good will to learn about each other and our communities and to insist that our safety was always in solidarity.
This year that message needs emphatic repetition and we are walking to honor those lost in 2001, to hold onto our memories, and to recommit to solidarity between and among our people and others.

The point: NY's new immigration law took an important step in banning 287g agreements, but there's more work to do when it comes to addressing the *many* forms of collusion that are deployed to funnel our neighbors into the hands of ICE. Full chart: www.immigrantdefenseproject.org/new-york-ice...
The TL;DR

The new law bans 287g deportation agreements – that’s a good step! But, the entanglement of local police with ICE is one of the biggest engines of mass deportation across the US, and there are a lot of urgent protections this new state law doesn’t have. So we have a lot more work to do.

287g deportation agreements - sometimes described as a "formal agreement," are a core part of Trump’s mass deportation agenda. Banning these agreements - over a dozen in NY state - is an important step.
287(g) AGREEMENTS

Formal agreements between law enforcement agencies and ICE to officially “deputize” a certain number of local officers as ICE agents. The program has three levels: 1) Warrant Service Officer, 2) Jail Enforcement Model in jails, and 3) Task Force model which involves local police conducting immigration arrests/raids in public.

Do these states protect people from this form of collusion?
Illinois: Yes, prohibited
Oregon: Yes, prohibited

Tactic 3: Asking about immigration status Tactic 4: Sharing personal info with ICE Tactic 5: Using ICE/CBP officers as interpreters All three of these tactics open up the door to funneling more neighbors to ICE.
Asking about immigration status

A law enforcement officer specifically asking an individual – regardless of an arrest or not, about their immigration status. This information may then be used to collude with ICE and funnel someone to ICE.

Do these states protect people from this form of collusion?
Illinois: Yes, prohibited
Oregon: Yes, prohibited
California: Yes, prohibited
New York: No clear limitsSharing personal info with ICE

A law enforcement agency gives ICE a community members’ non-publicly available work or home address, which ICE then uses to target the person.

Do these states protect people from this form of collusion?
Illinois: partially prohibited
Oregon: partially prohibited
California: partially prohibited
New York: no clear limitsUsing ICE or CBP officers as interpreters
Allowing ICE or CBP officers to serve as interpreters allows them access to identify and target more community members, opening the door to funnel more people into ICE’s hands.

Do these states protect people from this form of collusion?
Illinois: Not prohibited
Oregon: Not prohibited
California: Yes, prohibited
New York: no clear limits

Why does this matter? The entanglement of local police with ICE is one of the biggest engines of mass deportation across the US. The tactics of notifying ICE and transferring someone from jail/state prison into ICE custody are directly connected to one another.
Notification to ICE

A law enforcement agency calls ICE or Border Patrol to notify them when a community member is about to be released after an arrest or when a sentence has been completed. Instead of going home to their family, the community member is instead whisked away by ICE to a detention center.

Do these states protect people from this form of collusion?
Illinois: Yes, prohibited
Oregon: Yes, prohibited
California: Partially prohibited
New York: no clear limitsTransfers from jail or state prison custody

When a community member is about to be released after an arrest or when a sentence has been completed, a local law enforcement agency instead directly facilitates the transfer of the person to ICE.

Do these states protect people from this form of collusion?
Illinois: Yes, prohibited
Oregon: Yes, prohibited
California: Partially prohibited
New York: no clear limits
