Today in #LaborHistory 10/1/1964: #FreeSpeech Movement began at UC Berkeley, when Jack Weinberg was arrested for refusing to show ID to campus #police at an illegal literature table. Thousands of students spontaneously surrounded the police car, which remained for 32 hrs with Weinberg inside.

Coleman Rosenberg posted a graph showing, in blue, steady increase in productivity between 1940 and the 2020s; in light blue, a steady increase in workers' wages directly aligned with this increase in productivity, at least until the late 1970s, when it levels off and remains flat until the present; and in red, a line showing union membership increasing from the 1940s-1950s, leveling off in the 1960s-'70s, and then declining precipitously after Reagan was elected president.
