And, on a very timely note this insightful (if, erm, depressing) article from @morganj0nes.bsky.social on @lcefuk.bsky.social and @persuasionuk.bsky.social research about public attitudes to climate change. Shows a key task is to overcome pre-existing biases. Not convinced the NEB does that.

"But there is no straight line between experience and opinion. All experience is mediated via pre-existing political beliefs" Fascinating analysis here of experience vs media coverage in shaping climate salience - with wider implications for how we think about the drivers of political opinion

One of the big problems with polling-and-focus-group driven politics is that it narrows our political imagination, and treats people as static data points to be negotiated (or perhaps manipulated) rather than meaningful democratic interlocutors who could be open to new possibilities

The ability to pour hundreds of millions of pounds into a loss-making TV channel, bent on wrenching British politics sharply to the right, is yet another of the ways in which extreme wealth is trying to remake UK democracy. It needs to be part of any serious conversation about political funding.

I think British people claim to like Baked potatoes more than they actually do. I've seen a lot of baked potato takeaway places that go out of business. The baked potato is a totemic item in the consciousness of the Briton, the value of which is not in the eating, but in the possibility of doing so.
