For the 3rd year in a row, Labour conference arrives off the back of a summer of far-right mobilisation. Last year, Keir Starmer responded strongly, if somewhat belatedly. What should Burnham do? Some answers from Jon Cruddas, Sarah Mulley & Jana Mills here: onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/epdf/10....

Kind of grimly fascinating as always, coming from the former director of strategy to a Labour PM. There just isn't a future for a centre-left politics that is this hostile to pretty basic progressive values.

Really pleased to be the newly relaunched Progressive Review. I've written about the way in which places – by-elections, bellweather constituencies – are written about, which often have to do more with authors' priors and expectations of form than the realities of the electoral map.

UK politics has never been a level-playing field financially. The Conservatives have always outspent other parties, & smaller parties invariably struggle for cash. But this is a different order of magnitude. It's the difference between having a larger army & an atomic bomb. Parliament *must* act.

A serious democratic society simply cannot allow this. That's £72 million from just two men. (Both, until lately, based overseas). The average UK earner (full-time) would have to work for over 1,800 years to raise that much. It's a nuclear strike on any pretence at the equality of political power

Citizenship applications are on the rise. There is an argument in some quarters that it is somehow a bad sign that more people want to become citizens. But our argument is the opposite. While governments should be able to control migration, they should also ensure a pathway to citizenship for all.
