#OnThisDay in 1861, Charles Darwin wrote to his friend, "But I am very poorly today and very stupid and hate everybody and everything." 📜🧪
Sepia photograph of Charles Darwin in old age, seated in a chair and shown from the waist up in three-quarter profile facing right, against a plain backdrop. He is bald on top with white hair at the sides, a lined forehead, and a long, full white beard. He wears a dark, heavy overcoat with wide lapels over a waistcoat, his hands resting in his lap at the lower right.A line of Charles Darwin's handwriting in brown ink on cream paper, with faint writing showing through from the other side of the page. It reads: "But I am very poorly today & very stupid & hate everybody & everything."

Great to see the community stand up against surveillance tech, great to see local officials actually listen
Header of a news article by Nickie Hayes in the Poughkeepsie Journal. “Dutchess officials change course on Flock cameras after public outcry.
Key points: Dutchess County held a Flock forum at the Pleasant Valley Town Hall on Sept. 23 at 5 p.m. to hear what people had to say about Flock cameras and answer common questions.
County officials were met with a unified display of skepticism or outright disdain for Flock cameras.
After the forum, Dutchess County Sheriff Kirk Imperati and Dutchess County District Attorney Anthony Parisi changed course.
Following a standing-room-only community forum, two county officials have announced they are withdrawing their support from Dutchess County's continued use of Flock Safety technology.“

What would a stone tool look like after it was used to scrape/shape a lot of bamboo? A lot like this one in the new Bianfu Cave Denisovan report. Basing this on my work replicating the uses of Homo floresiensis (hobbit) tools from Liang Bua, after I found bamboo fibres on them in a residue study 🏺🧪
Photo of a greyish stone tool, less than 5cm long according to the scale beside it. It is shown from three angles that reveal a steep edged concavity along one side. The image is from a paper in Nature titled ‘Denisovans from southwestern China and their subsistence strategies’.

Just sent my @eshesociety.bsky.social conference poster off to the printers. Looking forward to meeting colleagues and talking about brain evolution in fossil hominins and modern gibbons in a few weeks! #FossilFriday
Conference poster with graphs, images of brain endocasts, and some text. Title: What can small apes teach us about the evolution of big brains? Text: Gibbons (Hylobatidae) have many parallels with fossil hominins including variable brain and body size, and taxonomic diversity originating in the Pliocene [1]. Comparison with gibbons can illuminate potential causes and consequences of hominin endocranial (i.e., brain) diversity. Gibbon craniofacial variation is low, consistent with genetic drift or stabilizing selection [2-3], yet their brains and endocasts are under-explored.
Between-group principal component analysis of endocranial shape in gibbons and hominins. Hylobates is most similar to Nomascus and Hoolock to Symphalangus, despite size differences in these dyads. Among hominins, smaller-brained Homo is relatively ‘intermediate’ in shape between H. erectus and sapiens. These patterns suggest there is not a simple relationship between endocast size and shape.
Encephalization characterizes hominin evolution while gibbons (especially Hylobates) may be phyletic dwarves. Variation in size-shape space (3D plots, above) suggests different pathways to brain size change (PC1), with larger hylobatids and smaller hominin taxa separated on PCs 2-3. Each PC is associated with different shape changes among gibbons versus hominins (endocast meshes, above).
Gray shading above highlights the majority of within- and between-genus variation in gibbons, against which to compare hominin variation. KNM-ER 1470 and especially KNM-ER 1813 are more different from other fossil Homo than most members of the same gibbon genus are from one another. Most human and Homo erectus endocast shape differences are beyond the majority of intergeneric gibbon comparisons.

Hominins underwent substantial endocranial size and shape evolution compared to a gibbon baseline. More research into gibbon endocasts, brains, and cognition will be illuminating: “Overlooked small apes need more attention!” [8]
