A classic museum display of model dinosaurs, including triceratops and ankylosaurus. Amidst them is a clay dodo staring wide-eyed at us. Another museum display, this one on the Japanese tea ceremony. Perched among genuine artefacts ts is a little model of Wallace from Wallace & Gromit, with his own tiny tea set.

New book day from @emilymandel.bsky.social is always a special treat! Cannot wait to explore it. Plus it’s a beautiful object in itself 📚
I’m holding a hardback copy of Exit Party by Emily St. John Mandel in front of a rural window. The cover has coloured lines - orangish above, greenish below - that separate a Paris scene at the top from upside down palm trees and buildings at the bottom. The same book, showing how the lines and scenes from the cover are sprayed onto the text edges, but reversed so Paris is at the bottom.

What would a stone tool look like after it was used to scrape/shape a lot of bamboo? A lot like this one in the new Bianfu Cave Denisovan report. Basing this on my work replicating the uses of Homo floresiensis (hobbit) tools from Liang Bua, after I found bamboo fibres on them in a residue study 🏺🧪

Can I suggest the oldest preserved chair in Europe might be this massive stone block in House 7 of Neolithic Skara Brae? It rests between hearth and dresser, perfect for sitting and tale-telling in the long winter nights. (I know I’m stretching the idea of a ‘chair’ here 🪑🤔) 📷 by me, Sept 2026
Photo inside a mostly complete drystone house dating back around 5000 years. This is House 7 at Skara Brae, a Neolithic village in Orkney. A square arrangement of stones outlines a fireplace on a sandy clay floor, and an upright set of stone slabs makes shelving beyond. In between is a roughly cube-shaped stone block just right for sitting. The scene is illuminated by light coming from the doorway, behind and to the left of the photographer (me).
