How & why does the distribution of fitness effects #DFE vary among species? Meixi Lin, @klohmueller.bsky.social &co analyze genetic variation from 11 animal species, finding that fitness effects are influenced by phylogeny, population size, & organismal complexity @plosbiology.org 🧪 buff.ly/t5q7Mqo
Mutations are more deleterious in mammals compared to insects and birds. Left: The phylogenetic relationship among the (sub)species included in this study. Middle: The mean deleterious mutation effects (|s|mean) for 11 (sub)species, assuming a gamma-distributed DFE of neutral and deleterious mutations. From top to bottom, species are increasingly divergent from humans: mice, fin whales, vaquitas, arctic wolves, gray wolves, collared flycatchers, pied flycatchers, halictid bees, Drosophila and mosquitoes. Numbers show the ranks of |s|mean. Right: The shape parameter (alpha) of the gamma-distributed DFE for 11 (sub)species. Numbers show the ranks of alpha.

Structural variation makes an important contribution to genetic diversity. An integrated analysis of long-read and short-read sequencing data created an expanded database of structural variation in canines. Several structural variants, including multiple mobile element insertions, have frequency profiles across major clades of modern dog breeds consistent with selection.
