An incredibly silly meme with an image of Buckinghamshire's waterways. The following text is around it.

'Can't remember the names of the rivers and waterways in historic Buckinghamshire? Try this handy mnemonic!

"Roman roads really ran right resiliently"

[The first letter of the following words (R) is highlighted]
River Thames
River Great Ouse
River Wye
River Thame
River Colne
River Ouzel'

There is an image of an otter in the bottom left with a speech bubble says 'It's easy!'

An infinite number of mathematicians enter a bar. The 1st orders a beer. The next says: "I'll have 1/2 of what he ordered" The next says: "I'll have 1/2 of that..." The bartender stops them, pours two beers and says: "I get it, but you need to know your limits."

I get the joke here, but it is important to stress to folks that we're taught a lot of stuff that most of us will never use, because: 1. learning it makes you better prepared for whatever path your career eventually takes, and 2. learning abstract math trains one's brain to *think*, in general

Discworld QOTD, from Men at Arms
The reason that the rich were so rich, Vimes reasoned, was because they managed to spend less money.

Take boots, for example. He earned thirty-eight dollars a month plus allowances. A really good pair of leather boots cost fifty dollars. But an affordable pair of boots, which were sort of OK for a season or two and then leaked like hell when the cardboard gave out, cost about ten dollars.

Those were the kind of boots Vimes always bought, and wore until the soles were so thin that he could tell where he was in Ankh-Morpork on a foggy night by the feel of the cobbles.

But the thing was that good boots lasted for years and years. A man who could afford fifty dollars had a pair of boots that'd still be keeping his feet dry in ten years' time, while the poor man who could only afford cheap boots would have spent a hundred dollars on boots in the same time and would still have wet feet.

This was the Captain Samuel Vimes 'Boots' theory of socioeconomic unfairness.

This is very similar to the suggestion put forward by the Quirmian philosopher Ventre, who said, "Possibly the gods exist, and possibly they do not. So why not believe in them in any case? If it's all true you'll go to a lovely place when you die, and if it isn't then you've lost nothing, right?" It always embarrassed Samuel Vimes when civilians tried to speak to him in what they thought was “policeman.” If it came to that, he hated thinking of them as civilians. What was a policeman, if not a civilian with a uniform and a badge? But they tended to use the term these days as a way of describing people who were not policemen. It was a dangerous habit: once policemen stopped being civilians the only other thing they could be was soldiers.

“Sin, young man, is when you treat people like things. Including yourself. That’s what sin is.”

“It’s a lot more complicated than that - “

“No. It ain’t. When people say things are a lot more complicated than that, they means they’re getting worried that they won’t like the truth. People as things, that’s where it starts.”

Hogfather million to one chance search

Hi everyone, this is a huge longshot but wondering if any of you lovely folk might be able to help. My partner just told me that her dad (who sadly died more than 20 years ago) gave her a hardback copy of Hogfather, but it got lost in one of her moves not long after he died.

I doubt we'd ever find it, but it would be an amazing New Year miracle if we could discover it and I could buy it back if it's still out there. It's signed in the front cover "To Anthea" and probably says from Dad or similar.

Like I say, it's a million to one chance...

Thanks for reading.
