This striking pre-Columbian greenstone masterwork depicts an Olmec shaman in mid-transformation, adopting the powerful facial features of a sacred were-jaguar. Originating from archaeological sites in the Gulf Coast region of Veracruz state, it was crafted between 900 BCE and 600 BCE.

RIP to the incomparable Sam Neill
How long has it been since you've seen the original "Jurassic Park"?

SAM NEILL The last time I watched it in its totality was sitting beside Princess Di at Leicester Square at the London opening.
On the other side of me was my son Tim - he was 11 and completely swept away by it, but about the time the T-Rex turns up, Tim started to fart. And the draft was drifting across me to royalty! I spent the whole film in a muck sweat, thinking, "Princess Di is being exposed to the horrors of a little boy's fart, but she's going to think it's me. I am going to be subliminally blamed for my son's crimes, and I don't think she'll talk to me afterwards." But she was well brought up and never mentioned it.
JEFF GOLDBLUM I love that story, Sam.
I've heard him tell that a couple of times, and it's just amazing the lengths that he will go to still blame the boy.

New York, Nebraska, Maine, Oklahoma and Colorado,”
Postmaster Bette Kuhn says. “These people have sent me
letters they want me to stamp. There are people who collect
cancellations.” She’ll also mark the day by handing out
cookies, soft drinks and balloons.

BERGMAN IN BROOKLYN: Three Ingmar

Bergman productions with the Royal Dramatic Theater of
Sweden — collectively billed Bergman on Stage — will be
seen at the Brooklyn Academy of Music as part of the New
York International Festival of the Arts. Though retired
from films, the legendary Swedish director remains active
in the theater. Running today through Wednesday is August
Strindberg’s Miss Julie, featuring Lena Olin (Enemies: A
Love Story) in her U.S. stage debut. Other productions:
Eugene O’Neill’s A Long Day’s Journey Into Night (June
14-16) and Henrik Ibsen’s A Doll’s House (June 18-20).

‘BILLBOARD’ NO. 1S: Rush Rush, Paula Abdul,
pop single; If the Devil Dances, Joe Diffie, country single;
Love Is a Wonderful Thing, Mi-
chael Bolton, adult contemporary
single; Power of Love-Love Power,
Luther Vandross, R&B single;
Spellbound, Paula Abdul, album.

COUNTRY KUDOS: alan

Jackson, Randy Travis, Clint
Black, George Jones, Travis Tritt
and Doug Stone are late additions
to the roster of performers at to-
night’s TNN Music City News
Country Awards on The Nashville
Network. Tanya Tucker and Roy
Clark host the proceedings from
Nashville’s Grand Old Opry House.
Presenters include Loretta Lynn, Kentucky HeadHunters,
Marie Osmond and NASCAR driver Richard Petty.

SINEAD AND SON: trish singer Sinéad O’Connor

will appear with her son Jake in a new video, My Special
Child, one of four songs on a benefit record due July 8.
Proceeds will go to Red Cross efforts to aid Kurdish
refugees. The release also includes live versions of Nothing
Compares 2 U and The Emperor’s New Clothes, plus an
instrumental version of My Special Child.

COMPOSER CASH: Meet the Composer, an

organization that gives grants to creators of contemporary
music works, recently awarded $380,000 to 19 composers
and choreographers for the creation of new dance works.
Among them: an anti-war piece, Shattered Sands, by Joan
Tower and Kathryn Posin to be premiered in March 1992
by the Milwaukee Ballet; a new work by choreographer
Trisha Brown and composer Terry Riley that will be
premiered in New York in 1993, and a piece by choreogra-
pher Peter Martins and composer Charles Wuorinen for the
New York City Ballet’s spring 1992 season.

ARRAU DIES: Pianist Claudio Arrau, known for his
interpretations of Beethoven, died after surgery Sunday in
Muerzzuschlag, Austria. He was 88.

VOCAL CHORD WONDERS: somehow ali

these items fit together. First, Jamaican rapper Daddy
Freddy set the world fast-rapping record at the Guinness
Book of Records Exhibition in New York, squeezing 528
syllables into a minute. And Crayola is offering $2,500 and a
trip to Universal Studios to the kid who’s the most creative
and original screamer (send tape to Crayola Screamin’
Neons Scream-Off, P.O. Box 598, Easton, Pa. 18044-0598.)
Finally, 8-year-old Monique Daigrepont won the under-12
division of the Chicken Capers chicken-imitating contest in
Dover, Del. Published reports describe the winning cackle
thusly: “Pwahhhhk. Pwahk-pwahk, pwahhhhk.”

Women + college math = better pay

Can Julia Roberts have it

On Friday, the “world’s

marry actor Kiefer Suther-

that’s the talk of Hollywood.

Her next starring-role

is sure to set audiences around the world weeping.
Roberts is in the one spot coveted by every actress on

Even so, women were paid
less in 26 of 33 job categories,

But women who studied
math were paid more than
women who didn’t. And they
earned more than male peers

agers of financial institutions.

Math is a great leveler be-
cause “we live in a quantitative

That higher grades in col-

more money doesn’t surprise
Jack Lesher, of Korn/Ferry,

found their way into positions
to gain track records.

Show time at the dance club

Spoofs and skits
add some spark

By Marco R. della Cava
USA TODAY

A bit of Broadway is making
its way into dance clubs.

Wacky theatrical skits with
outrageous sets are staged ev-
ery 30 minutes by a chain of
clubs aiming to spice up the
standard dance-a-thon.

The latest: New York’s Club-
Land at the Ritz, which opened
last week, offers everything

from a Madonna Ring Toss (aim for the over-
sized bustier) to King Kong trashing the New
York skyline. The shows are “packed with eye
candy for the MTV generation,” says Steve Jar-
vis, creator of the ClubLand concept.

Jarvis, 31, started similar clubs in Chicago,
Houston, Detroit and Worcester, Mass. —
ing theaters and outfitting them with high-tech

lighting and sound systems.
