It's just very very difficult to imagine some kind of equilibrium where LLM systems are widely used without far-reaching negative social consequences. It feels like we are heading for a world where, again, they do to the social fabric what cars did to the urban fabric.

Deepfakes are everywhere, but digital forensics investigators are fighting back. Learn more: scim.ag/42dMPBg
To verify images, digital forensics investigators will often check whether the geometry of the scene is realistic. In a real photo, lines that run parallel in reality—like floor tiles—should meet at a single vanishing point. In this image, however, the dotted lines do not meet in a single point, indicating it is a fake.
Image: an AI-generated image of soldiers marching down a hallway in three lines, wearing fatigues and carrying rifles. Four dotted white lines have been added over the image, running along the floor tiles visible in the foreground and extending back to where the vanishing point should be, behind the soldiers. Instead of meeting in a single point, the lines all cross at different points.Investigators also examine reflections. The lines connecting points on an object to matching points in its mirror image run parallel in reality, so similarly should meet at a vanishing point. In this image, the lines again do not converge on one point, revealing it to be a fake.
Image: An AI-generated image of a plastic cartoon dinosaur toy with its reflection visible in a small mirror. Four dotted white lines are layered over the image, connecting points on the toy with the same points on its reflection: the top of its eye, the end of its jaw, its hand, and its foot. The lines extend out to the side of the image, where they all cross at different points rather than meeting at a single point.Shadows can be a giveaway, too. Because the Sun is so far away, its rays are essentially parallel when they reach Earth's surface. That means that the lines connecting points on an object to the shadows they cast in sunlight should also intersect at a vanishing point. In this Al-generated image, that is clearly not the case.
Image: An AI-generated image of colorful, semi-transparent plastic cubes arranged in a group in a city plaza. Six dotted white lines are layered over the image, connecting corners of several cubes with the corresponding corners in their shadows. The lines extend upward off the edge of the image, toward where a vanishing point should be. Three of them converge on roughly the same point, but two extend further, and one cuts across all the others at an angle.

The U.S. AI industry is being run by a batshit rationalist sex cult, and no, I am not being hyperbolic - they’re genuinely Like That:
Erin Redwing
@realizingerin
I went to an rationalist/EA Al doomer event last night with the goal of meeting someone who could calmly explain to me the argument for how they get to the conclusion that Al will kill everyone.
Because these are rationalists, I expected to find people who could lay out a serious extinction pathway, walk through the assumptions and intermediate steps, identify choke points where negative pathways could potentially be regulated, and entertain disagreement about where their assumptions might break down.
My experience was the exact opposite.
The people I spoke to seemed psychologically unable to entertain the possibility that their conclusion (that Al literally kills everyone, which was a point that many would not even budge on) might be wrong.
Their most extreme conclusion was treated as an axiom.
I had multiple people walk out of conversations with me when I questioned their inevitable extinction premise.
At one point during a panel, the moderator asked everyone in the audience who was still skeptical of Al doom to raise their hands. About half the room did. He then told all of the skeptics to leave the panel and go with one of the speakers, who would answer their questions separately. They filtered out all the skeptics, and continued the panel only with the subset who accepted their extreme position.
I genuinely felt like a heretic just for questioning whether superintelligent Al inevitably leads to the extinction of humanity, or entertaining the possibility that the future might actually turn out well.
That does not mean Al safety is fake. Obviously there are serious questions about rapidly advancing Al systems and what happens as they become much more capable. Those are exactly the conversations I went there hoping to have.
But what I encountered was an apocalyptic death cult. These people are not rational. They are deeply afraid, they reinforce that fear in one another, and they have become so emotionally committed to apocalypse

Speaking as someone who was there in the early 2000s, blogs weren't slop. Some of them were CRAP, but it was all HUMAN-MADE. The equivalent of "A.i." slop back then was the SPAM in blog COMMENTS. That was industrialized, automated, scammy bullshit -- just like generative "A.i." now.

Hey @ericlipton.nytimes.com 👋 AI is not “evolving” on its own. *People* are choosing how to build it. *People* are choosing how to train it. *People* are choosing how to run it. Maybe the problem is that they are the *wrong people* to make these choices.

This seems uncomplicated to me. Someone established a goal and commissioned a process that resulted in a criminal act. Agency always traces back to the font of human decision-making at the entry point to any process, including automated ones. Layers of automation may obscure, but not obviate, agency

"WE STAND WITH WORKERS - OUR STRUGGLES ARE CONNECTED.

After a year of record high returns profiting from genocide, Microsoft announces 20% layoffs in Xbox.

No Games for Genocide renews its call to boycott Xbox and divest from Microsoft & Xbox.""Our struggles are connected. To maximise profits, Microsoft and Xbox maintain various partnerships with Israel, aiding and abetting their ongoing genocide in Gaza and oppression of the Palestinian people. Meanwhile, they make workers’ conditions ever more precarious to hoard wealth for themselves. The same institutions that are laying off workers to line bosses' pockets are providing the technology that Israel uses in its colonial regime of oppression to get richer.

We deserve a games industry by and for the people who labour to make games; we deserve a games industry that refuses to profit from the colonisation of Palestinians.""OUR CALL TO ACTION:

1) Head to our website and sign our pledge at nogamesforgenocide.com.

2) Spread the word about the boycott and mobilise others to join.

3) Read more on our website about what you can do to divest from Xbox and Microsoft as a gamer, worker, journalist or content creator to build power together.""References:
