Yesterday NSF announced a series of major changes to its grantmaking, best encapsulated by a shift from bottom-up 'investigator-driven inquiry' to more top-down 'NSF-directed opportunities'. These include 4 Frontier Initiatives (previously described as 'Grand Research Challenges'). My reporting:

NSF moves to overhaul funding approach in line with White House priorities
The major funder of basic science has not said how its new initiatives will be funded — but staff worry streamlined approach will further squeeze cash for core sciences.

Clownfish aren't born male or female. They're born undifferentiated, then the largest in a group becomes female and the second largest becomes male. If the female dies, the male becomes female. That's just one fish. There are over 34,000 species. And the diversity is wild. #fish #ocean #nature

The ecology of extinction has three stages: Presence. The species shapes the ecosystem. Echo. The adults remain, but recruitment fails. The ecosystem still looks intact while quietly unraveling. Absence. We finally notice what was lost. Time makes extinction invisible.
