Mix. selectivity is everywhere in cortex: from vis. to PFC This paper relates to Cover's theorem but the typical explainer kind of sucks I'll try to explain how the theory relates to the paper, and the importance of "weird" neurons A🧵with my toy model and notes: #neuroskyence #compneuro #NeuroAI

Our paper on odour categorization in the Drosophila mushroom body is now out in Cell Reports! 🎉 We found that αβ and α′β′ Kenyon cells—but not γ KCs—distinguish food-related from non-food odours at the population level. Very happy to see this work published! 🪰🧠 doi.org/10.1016/j.ce...

Very nice to see this extension + (most importantly) functional assay of our initial observation of non-random overconvergence of food-responsive PNs onto downstream aB and a'B' KCs (@zhihaozheng.bsky.social et al. Curr Biol 2022). Connectomics leading to testable hypotheses: as it should be!😀

That contextual signals are broadly available does not mean that signals everywhere are used, or causally involved in behavior, at every moment. They aren’t. A bit like a radio broadcast, information may be widely available while circuits selectively “tune in” when needed. So where still matter.

Then the big dollars flow, and cool work happens, and sometimes the prophecy turns out to be self-fulfilling due to the scale of the investment (and a lot of hard work).

One clear pattern over the years is it seems to be easier to get big dollars when a you can make a narrative that your new technology is a hell of a lot cheaper/better than an ‘old’ one… 2/

Seems good -- maybe try to work in a sentence or two on how quality of results goes up (and up and up) as a function of scale? It's conceptually interesting & will also help people understand e.g. why the frontier labs want ever-larger data centers.

Adding some deep-sea wonder to your scroll💙✨️ This siphonophore, Erenna richardi, can be identified by the massive clusters of tentilla (the side branches of the tentacle) at the end of the tail (siphosome). In Monterey Bay, this species has been observed at average depths of about 1,100 meters.
