I have a new paper out today on what Andy Burnham needs to do to achieve “the biggest council housebuilding programme since the post-war period”. A coherent (I hope) to-do list, explaining the contingencies and pre-empting potential missteps. Do read the paper in full, but here's a 🧵

The headteacher came into assembly one day in Y1 (1990?) and said that we shouldn't eat Nerds (the sweets) because they put bits of broken glass in them. I was(/am) a big fan of Nerds, so was rather dismayed but also surprised that the manufacturers could have made such an idiotic business decision.

This chart is why you can't simply measure the housing crisis in terms of rent as a % of income. Above a certain level letting agents will deem you unable to afford the tenancy so you're basically stuck with your folks. From @intergenerational.bsky.social's Cost Of Loving Crisis report 👌🏻

Given what has happened to the RNLI, this is when wider civil society should speak in solidarity about the far-right and political parties attacking charities delivering vital services for vulnerable people. The voluntary sector is part of our social fabric, it needs protecting.

Good to see problems with the rental market finally being depicted on TV comedy - but could they not have commissioned this a bit sooner, before break clauses were effectively abolished? I guess we'll see if it's a post-RRA eviction in the other one
guardian screengrab: "Break Clause Many of us may have experienced the peculiar anguish of being trapped in a tenancy agreement with someone you’ve just broken up with, and this premise forms the spine of the new Channel 4 comedy Break Clause. Lara Ricote and Samuel Bottomley play the couple, working from a script by Jess Bray from the brilliant We Might Regret This. The series originated as a 16-minute Comedy Blap that you can – and should – watch on Channel 4. If the series maintains the charm of the original, this should be something very special.
Channel 4, TBC"Guardian screengrab "It Gets Worse A fresh comedy from Leo Reich, whose debut Edinburgh fringe show Literally Who Cares?! was such a barnstorming success that it immediately got picked up by HBO Max. It Gets Worse is a look at three young mates in London who are on the verge of getting evicted. But what’s really staggering here is the sheer number of A-listers who have signed on – from Andrew “hot priest” Scott to Lena Dunham. This should be special.

Not a huge surprise to see landlords advertising high rents then agreeing lower ones, now that they can't ask for bids, as @londoncentric.media reports. It'll take some getting used to but should still work out as less stress overall for renters. www.londoncentric.media/p/london-lan...

Ugh, not the main point but licensed HMOs are a matter of public record - it's important that tenants can check their home's status with their council as they could claim rent back if unlicensed. Stuff like this could lead councils to hide info that is essential to renters exercising their rights
