Deputy chief exec at Generation Rent. Geordie. Mostly housing, sometimes other policy stuff and daft observations. Employer doesn't necessarily agree with everything I say.

The more I think about it, the more I realise how many problems you'd create by the combination of abolishing stamp duty and allowing unlimited exemption from inheritance tax for housing. You'd get a massive demand for "upsizing", putting all your wealth into housing, to avoid inheritance tax.

The Tories need to listen hard to what high end buying agent Henry Pryor told me when I reported on downsizing trends: “If people only leave their family homes with a lift from an undertaker, the housing market shudders to a halt.”

I'm sorry if this is obvious but the Tory proposal to exempt family homes completely from IHT will lead to 1] pensioners buying the biggest houses they possibly can 2] pensioners refusing to downsize which can only be bad news for younger families trying to buy family homes

Ok, I know that to some extent to follow current affairs, people occasionally need to post stuff from Twitter here, but to screengrab Twitter ragebait and just rage about it here instead of there seems a little self defeating.

Kemi Badenoch has promised to take family homes out of inheritance tax entirely. Unfortunately that makes it even less worthwhile for older households to downsize and free up large homes for growing families - and means we'd rely yet further on building to fix the housing crisis

Just comparing last week's pensions discourse with this week's £100k childcare discourse. In both instances, you have groups who are generally deemed "wealthy". For one, it's unthinkable to contemplate taking their state benefits away. For the other, there is outrage if you try to give it to them

The Renters’ Rights Act means landlords now need a good reason to evict you, and gives councils stronger powers to tackle unsafe homes. Scrapping it would be a victory for landlords who neglect their properties and threaten eviction to bully tenants.

Do we know if the £700m is after accounting for the extra income tax people currently just below the threshold would start to pay as they took promotions etc? If so, I'd have thought Labour could do it and pay for it by just raising the top rate (though realise manifesto might hinder that)

I have a new paper out today on what Andy Burnham needs to do to achieve “the biggest council housebuilding programme since the post-war period”. A coherent (I hope) to-do list, explaining the contingencies and pre-empting potential missteps. Do read the paper in full, but here's a 🧵

Glass Brings Candy Recall
Some packages of Nerds brand candy were being recalled from stores in the Pittsburgh area Wednesday after the discovery of pieces of glass in a box handed out on Halloween night, authorities said.

The headteacher came into assembly one day in Y1 (1990?) and said that we shouldn't eat Nerds (the sweets) because they put bits of broken glass in them. I was(/am) a big fan of Nerds, so was rather dismayed but also surprised that the manufacturers could have made such an idiotic business decision.

This chart is why you can't simply measure the housing crisis in terms of rent as a % of income. Above a certain level letting agents will deem you unable to afford the tenancy so you're basically stuck with your folks. From @intergenerational.bsky.social's Cost Of Loving Crisis report 👌🏻

We’ve seen this movie before. It ends with homelessness, Temporary Accommodation costs crippling local councils, renters in severe financial hardship. That this can be done without huge social damage is the politics of wishful thinking.
