Brilliant from the Govt. but will not be achieved without acknowledging that the Home Office is directly responsible for pushing people into homelessness. NRPF, high visa fees, bureaucracy in applications, lack of access to legal aid etc. all contribute already. The changes will make this worse.

“We will be compassionate to a strictly limited number of people, and will save as many lives as the Daily Mail will let us”
I know the British people have not given up on their belief that we should be compassionate, live up to our international obligations, and save the lives of those fleeing war and persecution. But I also know this process must be capped and controlled, and communities must be ready and able to welcome those who come here.

We welcome the Gov's announcement of new safe routes. But more is needed. Labour can talk about "fairness" when it scraps earned settlement plans and delivers safe routes for all instead of punishing thousands of people who have worked in this country for years. www.theguardian.com/politics/202...

The complete and total collapse of state function in the face of far right extremists. It is frankly ludicrous that Daniel Thomas continues to be at large given the series of crimes committed which he has literally filmed.

This was obviously going to happen. Very frustrating for electoral reform campaigns when political parties endorse for the sake of improved access to power and not for the benefit of democracy.

This is brilliant and I agree. But all the migrant orgs who have been attacked for the last 5 years - physically, digitally, daily, also deserve to be thanked. We are providing homelessness/ domestic violence services, education, arts, mental health support, welfare etc. It is vital public service.

Given what has happened to the RNLI, this is when wider civil society should speak in solidarity about the far-right and political parties attacking charities delivering vital services for vulnerable people. The voluntary sector is part of our social fabric, it needs protecting.

The main issue with the conversation on tax reform atm is that it treats tax as punitive. It's not a punishment and should not be treated as such. And we don't *need* to tax the wealthy to pay for things, there are huge benefits but the Govt. can still prioritise finances in any way they wish.

Let’s be clear. Labour’s line on immigration is that immigrants are a bad thing, to be tolerated in the minimum number necessary for the NHS, the economy and so forth, but basically and essentially bad. There’s no other logical reason possible for Mahmood’s approach, endorsed by Burnham.

Yeah, I think the story here is basically the government having no response to the 2025 race riots, a pretty soft response all summer to attempts to restart them, and this creating the space for the current pattern of coordinated militias attacking ports. It's judicial and cultural, not fiscal.

Responding to mass intimidation by masked fascists by saying “of course you have a point but we’ve already done everything you said you wanted” is just so Labour Party
Motorist Toby Mackenzie posted online: “People dressed in black surrounding my car, pretty much left me fearing for my life.

[Photo with caption: Two masked men stopping traffic near the Port of Dover. Pic: Toby Mackenzie]
“Happy that I didn't drive through them to protect myself. Generally fearing for my life.”

Dover MP Mike Tapp told KentOnline that he is in contact with the police over the ongoing situation.

He said: “I am fed up with idiots coming to Dover to cause disruption. I bet if you asked any one of those ‘protesters’ they wouldn’t know small boat crossings are down by 40%, and we are working hard to fix the mess. Go home, enjoy your weekend/get a job.”

Reform UK county councillor Paul King has also commented, saying: “Avoid the port area, large number of men have blocked the A20.

“I’ve been told it’s a stop the boats protest. Speaking to local women, they felt frightened by such a large group of men walking up the street.

Agree with this. I don't think Polanski has much to lose by standing in this by-election. It'll also give Greens much to learn from how they can treat London in the next election. And on the converse, it'll be Burnham's first test of his national messages too. Got to love a by-election.

No: it isn’t “genuinely bad news for the far right” that the framing & salience of its pet subject has been adopted by the entire political-media system. That assumption mistakes the far right‘s demands as genuine & limited, & thus manageable, rather than being a proxy or wedge issue for much worse.
Post from “Otto English” QPing one from Sunder Katwala: Sunder posts ‘“Small boat arrivals fall to six year low" - Telegraph. June, July, August were lowest for six years’ and screenshots a headline from the Telegraph; Otto comments in the QP: ‘Genuinely bad news for the far right’

IMO the best way to understand how the media decided they hated Corbyn is the response to his proposal to nationalise Broadband. Remains one of the best ideas I've heard a politician come up with, that would have benefitted EVERYONE. Especially given the sad state of connectivity across the UK.

Obvs people who propose things in political parties do it because they care very deeply about that issue -whether that viewpoint is weird or sensible. And a debate about it does not automatically mean policy. Like how Backbench debates don't equal legislation. But this is objectively quite funny.
